چکیده

This paper deals with value ordering heuristics used in a complete tree search algorithm for solving binary constraint satisfaction problems. Their aim is to guide the search towards a solution. First, we show the limits of the traditional prospective approach, which uses the size of the domains of the still unassigned variables. In an advantageous context, where arc consistency is maintained and allows the time spent by the dynamic value ordering to be negligible, the speedup is poor when the problems are hard. Then, we present a new value ordering heuristic based on a learning-fromfailure scheme. Instead of making a choice a priori, an interleaving search follows every sub-tree to gather information. After this learning phase, the algorithm focuses on the most promising one. This new algorithm, named Progressive Focusing Search, is compared to Interleaved Depth First Search and appears to be efficient for problems on the phase transition complexity peak.

Efficiently Mining Maximal Frequent Itemsets

We present GenMax, a backtrack search based algorithm for mining maximal frequent itemsets. GenMax uses a number of optimizations to prune the search space. It uses a novel technique called progressive focusing to perform maximality checking, and diffset propagation to perform fast frequency computation. Systematic experimental comparison with previous work indicates that different methods have...

OPTIMAL DESIGN OF STEEL MOMENT FRAME STRUCTURES USING THE GA-BASED REDUCED SEARCH SPACE (GA-RSS) TECHNIQUE

This paper proposes a GA-based reduced search space technique (GA-RSS) for the optimal design of steel moment frames. It tries to reduce the computation time by focusing the search around the boundaries of the constraints, using a ranking-based constraint handling to enhance the efficiency of the algorithm. This attempt to reduce the search space is due to the fact that in most optimization pro...

Selective Induction of Rate-Based Process Models

This paper addresses the task of inductive process modeling, which involves constructing an explanation of multivariate time series in terms of background knowledge. We review earlier research on this problem, focusing on RPM, an induction system that is substantially more efficient and robust than its predecessors. We also examine three of its limitations: overeager binding of process instance...

Softly Focusing On Data

A computational approach providing a focus for unsupervised, reactive, data mining is suggested. In data mining, achieving focus is an important issue. This is because there are too many attributes and values in a real database to consider them all. A soft focus is suggested as both data and the focus product may be imprecise. An approach is suggested for unsupervised search controlled by progr...

Evolution: Enhanced Footing for Snake Limb Development

Two groups have studied the loss of limbs in snake evolution by focusing on a long-distance cis-acting enhancer of Sonic Hedgehog. They find a progressive degeneration of binding sites for key transcription factors, mirroring the progressive limblessness occurring in these reptiles.
