Vision algorithms for guiding the Automated

چکیده
Under the FAA Aging Aircraft Research Program we are developing robots to deploy conventional and, later, new-concept NDI sensors for commercial aircraft skin inspection. Our prototype robot, the Automated NonDestructive Inspector (ANDI), holds to the aircraft skin with vacuum assisted suction cups, scans an eddy current sensor, and translates across the aircraft skin via linear actuators. Color CCD video cameras will be used to align the robot with a series of rivets we wish to inspect using NDI inspection sensors. In a previous paper we provided a background scenario and described two different solutions to the alignment problem: a model-based system built around edge detection and a trainable neural network system. In this paper, we revisit the background and previous research and detail the first steps taken towards a method that will combine the neural and the model based systems: a neural edge detector. The initial goal of the Automated NonDestructive Inspector (ANDI) project is to help the human inspector to work safely, rapidly, and effectively. This will be accomplished by providing the human inspector with a tool that eliminates the need to work in awkward positions or at tedious tasks, and by ensuring that measurements will be accurate and repeatable. A later goal is to improve the productivity of inspection activity by giving the inspector computer-based instrument monitoring and visual observation tools integrated with powerful database and trend-spotting tools that provide support for making judgements and decisions. Our initial plans include giving the human inspector, who is watching and supervising directly and via TV monitors , a data stream that is at least as reliable as the data stream generated in " hands-on " inspection, to acquire data more rapidly, to identify and mark areas of interest distinctly but removably, and to archive data automatically. ANDI affixes itself to the aircraft skin with vacuum assisted suction cups. In the envisioned fully functional system, electric power, air for the vacuum ejectors, pneumatic actuators, and air-bearings, and input and output signals are transported via an umbilical attached to a safety-tether that hangs from the safety-rail

Second-Order Statistical Texture Representation of Asphalt Pavement Distress Images Based on Local Binary Pattern in Spatial and Wavelet Domain
Assessment of pavement distresses is one of the important parts of pavement management systems to adopt the most effective road maintenance strategy. In the last decade, extensive studies have been done to develop automated systems for pavement distress processing based on machine vision techniques. One of the most important structural components of computer vision is the feature extraction met...
متن کاملNovel Automated Method for Minirhizotron Image Analysis: Root Detection using Curvelet Transform
In this article a new method is introduced for distinguishing roots and background based on their digital curvelet transform in minirhizotron images. In the proposed method, the nonlinear mapping is applied on sub-band curvelet components followed by boundary detection using energy optimization concept. The curvelet transform has the excellent capability in detecting roots with different orient...
متن کاملRobot Motion Vision Part II: Implementation
The idea of Fixation introduced a direct method for general recovery of shape and motion from images without using either feature correspondence or optical flow [1,2]. There are some parameters which have important effects on the performance of fixation method. However, the theory of fixation does not say anything about the autonomous and correct choice of those parameters. This paper presents ...
متن کاملDesign, Development and Evaluation of an Orange Sorter Based on Machine Vision and Artificial Neural Network Techniques
ABSTRACT- The high production of orange fruit in Iran calls for quality sorting of this product as a requirement for entering global markets. This study was devoted to the development of an automatic fruit sorter based on size. The hardware consisted of two units. An image acquisition apparatus equipped with a camera, a robotic arm and controller circuits. The second unit consisted of a robotic...
متن کاملTwo optimal algorithms for finding bi-directional shortest path design problem in a block layout
In this paper, Shortest Path Design Problem (SPDP) in which the path is incident to all cells is considered. The bi-directional path is one of the known types of configuration of networks for Automated Guided Vehi-cles (AGV).To solve this problem, two algorithms are developed. For each algorithm an Integer Linear Pro-gramming (ILP) is determined. The objective functions of both algorithms are t...
متن کاملMaking a Science of Model Search
Many computer vision algorithms depend on a variety of parameter choices and settings that are typically hand-tuned in the course of evaluating the algorithm. While such parameter tuning is often presented as being incidental to the algorithm, correctly setting these parameter choices is frequently critical to evaluating a method’s full potential. Compounding matters, these parameters often mus...
