Technische Universität München – Lehrstuhl für Informatik III 85748 Garching bei München 〈krompass|aulbach|kemper〉@in.tum.de Abstract: The emerging trend towards seamless monitoring of all business processes via comprehensive sensor networks – in particular RFID readers – creates new data management challenges. In addition to handling the huge volume of data generated by these sensor networks the information systems must support the efficient querying and analysis of both recent data and historic sensor readings. In this paper, we devise and evaluate a data staging architecture that consists of a distributed caching layer and a data warehouse. The caches maintain the most recent RFID events (i.e., sensor readings) to facilitate very efficient OLTP processing. Aged RFID events are removed from the caches and propagated into the data warehouse where related events are aggregated to reduce storage space consumption. The data warehouse can be utilized for business intelligence applications that, e.g., analyze the supply chain quality.

Data Warehousing, Data Mining, OLAP and OLTP Technologies Are Indispensable Elements to Support Decision-Making Process in Industrial World

This paper provides an overview of Data warehousing, Data Mining, OLAP, OLTP technologies, exploring the features, new applications and the architecture of Data Warehousing and data mining. The data warehouse supports on-line analytical processing (OLAP), the functional and performance requirements of which are quite different from those of the online transaction processing (OLTP) applications ...

HyPer: HYbrid OLTP&OLAP High PERformance Database System

The two areas of online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) present different challenges for database architectures. Currently, customers with high rates of mission-critical transactions have split their data into two separate systems, one database for OLTP and one so-called data warehouse for OLAP. While allowing for decent transaction rates, this separation h...

L-Store: A Real-time OLTP and OLAP System

Arguably data is a new natural resource in the enterprise world with an unprecedented degree of proliferation. But to derive real-time actionable insights from the data, it is important to bridge the gap between managing the data that is being updated at a high velocity (i.e., OLTP) and analyzing a large volume of data (i.e., OLAP). However, there has been a divide where specialized solutions w...

HyPer-sonic Combined Transaction AND Query Processing

In this demo we will prove that it is – against common belief – indeed possible to build a main-memory database system that achieves world-record transaction processing throughput and best-of-breed OLAP query response times in one system in parallel on the same database state. The two workloads of online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) present different cha...

A Formal Framework of Aggregation for the OLAP-OLTP Model

OLAP applications are widely used in business applications. They are often (implicitly) defined on top of OLTP systems and extensively use aggregation and transformation functions. The main OLAP data structure is a multidimensional table with three kinds of attributes: so-called dimension attributes, implicit attributes given by aggregation functions and fact attributes. Domains of dimension at...
