Synthesis of Textures with Intricate Geometries using BTF and Large Number of Textured Micropolygons

BTF is an effective representation for surfaces with mesoscopic geometries. However, with regard to materials with intricate and small-scaled geometries (e.g. furs, carpets or towels) many problems still remain, such as rendering complicated silhouettes, seamless tiling of textures, and sampling with sufficient frequencies. In this paper, we propose a method to synthesize and render objects, applying textures of such materials. In the method, repeating visual patterns caused by intricate geometries are synthesized by drawing a large number of small pieces of patterns. Then, the synthesized image is converted so that its color distributions approximate those of the image synthesized with BTF. Using the proposed method, we can synthesize the patterns and silhouettes caused by small-scaled geometries with the same color distributions as BTF.
