Sublinear Distance Labeling

چکیده
A distance labeling scheme labels the n nodes of a graph with binary strings such that, given the labels of any two nodes, one can determine the distance in the graph between the two nodes by looking only at the labels. A D-preserving distance labeling scheme only returns precise distances between pairs of nodes that are at distance at least D from each other. In this paper we consider distance labeling schemes for the classical case of unweighted and undirected graphs. We present a O( n D log 2D) bit D-preserving distance labeling scheme, improving the previous bound by Bollobás et al. [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 2005]. We also give an almost matching lower bound of Ω( n D ). With our D-preserving distance labeling scheme as a building block, we additionally achieve the following results: 1. We present the first distance labeling scheme of size o(n) for sparse graphs (and hence bounded degree graphs). This addresses an open problem by Gavoille et al. [J. Algo. 2004], hereby separating the complexity from distance labeling in general graphs which require Ω(n) bits, Moon [Proc. of Glasgow Math. Association 1965].1 2. For approximate r-additive labeling schemes, that return distances within an additive error of r we show a scheme of size O ( n r · polylog(r logn) logn ) for r ≥ 2. This improves on the current best bound of O ( n r ) by Alstrup et. al. [SODA 2016] for sub-polynomial r, and is a generalization of a result by Gawrychowski et al. [arXiv preprint 2015] who showed this for r = 2. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.2 Graph Theory, E.1 Data Structures, G.2.1 Combinatorics

متن کاملSublinear-Space Distance Labeling Using Hubs
We propose a labeling scheme for unweighted undirected graphs, that is an assignment of binary labels to vertices of a graph such that the distance between any pair of vertices can be decoded solely from their labels. Recently, Alstrup et al. [3] have shown a labeling scheme for sparse graphs with labels of size O( n D log D) where D = logn log m+n n . We present a simpler approach achieving si...
متن کاملSublinear deviation between geodesics and sample paths
We give a proof of the sublinear tracking property for sample paths of random walks on various groups acting on spaces with hyperbolic-like properties. As an application, we prove sublinear tracking in Teichmüller distance for random walks on mapping class groups, and on Cayley graphs of a large class of finitely generated groups.
متن کاملOn the block-structured distance to non-surjectivity of sublinear mappings
We show that the block-structured distance to non-surjectivity of a set-valued sublinear mapping equals the reciprocal of a suitable blockstructured norm of its inverse. This gives a natural generalization of the classical Eckart and Young identity for square invertible matrices. GSIA Working Paper 2003-23 ∗Supported by NSF grant CCR-0092655.
متن کاملAn Online Algorithm for Learning a Labeling of a Graph
This short report analyses a simple and intuitive online learning algorithm termed the graphtron for learning a labeling over a fixed graph, given a sequence of labels. The contribution is twofold, (a) we give a theoretical characterization of the possible sequence of mistakes, and (b) we indicate the use for extremely large-scale problems due to sublinear space complexity and nearly linear tim...
