Caloric requirements after operation.

چکیده
It has become clear since the original studies of Cuthbertson (1930) that the change in metabolism after injury involves an alteration in the internal environment and in the composition of the body, which is reflected in fluid and electrolyte metabolism, energy and intermediary metabolism and endocrine function (Moore & Ball, 1952). This is appreciated by the patient as loss of weight, diminished muscular strength and activity, and a temporary but definite decrease in intellectual application. The nutritional implications of these metabolic changes have been a major source of inquiry and much of the work has been directed towards two objectives. T h e main part has aimed at achieving a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved and of the factors which may influence the metabolic response to trauma. The other aspect has been principally clinical, dealing with the effect of these metabolic changes on the response of the patient to his management with particular emphasis on nutrition. It is with these two objectives in mind that this paper deals with the caloric requirements after operation.

Abnormal caloric requirements for weight maintenance in patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa.
OBJECTIVE This study tested previous findings that patients with eating disorders who attain normal weight have abnormal caloric requirements for maintaining weight. METHOD Fifty-three female patients meeting the DSM-III-R criteria for anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa were divided into four subgroups, and their daily caloric intake was measured over a weight-stable period. Patients wit...
متن کاملCaloric intake necessary for weight maintenance in anorexia nervosa: nonbulimics require greater caloric intake than bulimics.
In the past decade, patients with anorexia nervosa have been subdivided by the presence or absence of binging-and-purging behavior. Psychologic, physiologic, and premorbid weight differences have also been discovered between these subgroups. We now report that nonbulimic anorectics required 30-50% more caloric intake than bulimic anorectics to maintain a stable weight. This difference in calori...
متن کاملCaloric Requirements and Food Consumption Puzzles of the Poor
How much do caloric requirements vary across households and how do they affect food consumption patterns? Since caloric intake is a widely-used indicator of poverty and welfare, investigating changes in caloric requirements and food consumption patterns is important, especially for the poor. Combining anthropometric and time-use data for India, we construct a quantitative measure of individual ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF ELECTROSTIMULATION ON CALORIC-INDUCED NYSTAGMUS: A PRELIMINARY STUDY
The objective of this study was to describe the role of electrical stimulation in controlling peripheral vertigo. In a prospective study on 13 healthy volunteers, nystagmus was induced with caloric stimulation and the interval of nystagmus disappearance was recorded. This time indicates the basal response of vestibular end-organ. After caloric irrigation, pulsed signal was applied for each...
