Flex Your Symbol: A Case for Adapting Symbol Duration in Communication Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
In wireless networks, different links often have different signal power to noise power ratios (SNRs). SNR affects the reliability and throughput of a link. Current wireless systems adapt transmission power, modulation or coding to improve reliability and throughput, based on link SNR. However, all these systems transmit a modulated symbol for a fixed duration across all links. Theory and systems research, alike, ignore symbol duration as a variable to optimize for reliability and throughput. This paper shows that by adapting symbol duration, wireless links can realize significant improvements in both reliability and throughput. We implement symbol duration adaptation for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in a software-defined radio platform. The goodput gains depend on link SNR and the coding strategy. At low and mid SNR regimes, our system observes anywhere from 30% to 350% improvement in throughput. At high SNR regimes, as the link quality is already very high, symbol duration extension usually does not show a significant improvement. However, at all SNRs, the ability to extend the symbol duration increases link reliability in terms of packet reception ratio. This work has deep implications to network architecture and analysis, some of which are detailed in this paper.

On the Practical Aspects of Joint Passive Phase Conjugation and Equalization Underwater Communication Systems
Underwater acoustic communication systems suffer from the channel impairments which results in time spreading of the transmitted signal. In underwater environment, multiple replicas of the transmitted signal are received at the receiver through different paths, which causes significant Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFE) was utilized to overcome this type of inte...
متن کاملSymbol-Based Turbo Codes for Wireless Communications
This thesis studies a new method of combining Turbo Codes with various modulation techniques to take advantage of inherent trade-o s between BER performance, code rate, spectral e ciency and decoder complexity. Our new method, which we call Symbol-Based Turbo Codes, parses the parallel data streams of the Turbo Code encoder into n-bit symbols and maps each symbol to a point in a 2n-ary signal s...

متن کاملSymbol-Level Multiuser MISO Precoding for Multi-level Adaptive Modulation: A Multicast View
Symbol-level precoding is a new paradigm for multiuser multiple-antenna downlink systems which aims at creating constructive interference among the transmitted data streams. This can be enabled by designing the precoded signal of the multiantenna transmitter on a symbol level, taking into account both channel state information and data symbols. Previous literature has studied this paradigm for ...
