Hiring through referrals
نویسنده
چکیده
An equilibrium search model of the labor market is combined with a social network. The key features are that the workers’ network transmits information about jobs and that wages and entry of firms are determined in equilibrium. In the baseline model workers are homogeneous and referrals are used to mitigate search frictions. When worker heterogeneity is added referrals also facilitate the hiring of better workers. Consistent with empirical evidence, access to referrals decreases unemployment probability and increases wages for workers while hiring through referrals yields more productive workers for firms. The aggregate matching function exhibits decreasing returns to scale. ∗I would like to thank Steven Davis, Steven Durlauf, Sanjeev Goyal, Ed Green, Philipp Kircher, Nobu Kiyotaki, Guido Menzio, Alex Monge, Theodore Papageorgiou, Nicola Persico, Andres Rodriguez, Rob Shimer, Giorgio Topa, Neil Wallace, Randy Wright and Ruilin Zhou as well as many seminar and conference participants for helpful comments and the National Science Foundation for financial support (grant SES-0922215).

You’d Be Perfect for This:” Understanding the Value of Hiring through Referrals Employee referrals are a very common means by which firms hire new workers. Past work suggests that workers hired via referrals often perform better than non-referred workers, but we have little understanding as to why. In this paper, we demonstrate that this is primarily because referrals allow firms to select work...
متن کاملAre black workers missing the connection? The effect of spatial distance and employee referrals on interfirm racial segregation.
I use data on the hiring practices and spatial location of firms in four cities to model the process of interfirm racial segregation. When I control for the spatial location of the firm, the use of employee referrals reduced the probability of hiring a black worker by 75% in firms that are less than 10% black. Among all firms, the results suggest that employee referrals are just as important as...

Research on organizations and labor markets has rekindled interest in the role of insider referrals in matching workers to jobs, emphasizing the contribution this process makes to the reproduction of ethnic segregation in local labor markets. My objective in this study was to provide a systematic examination of ethnic/immigrant variation in these processes using unique data from the Multi-City ...
متن کاملDo Job Networks Disadvantage Women? Evidence from a Recruitment Experiment in Malawi
Using a field experiment in Malawi where applicants took part in a competitive selection process to become qualified for future surveyor positions with a local firm, we find that highly skilled women are systematically disadvantaged through the use of referrals. This happens both because men choose to recommend other men, and because women on average refer fewer candidates who qualify for the p...

Do firms build new capabilities by hiring new people? We explore this question in the context of the pharmaceutical industry’s movement towards science-driven drug discovery. We focus particularly on the potential problem of endogeneity in interpreting correlation between hiring and changes in organizational outcomes as evidence of the impact of new hires on the firm, and on the more fundamenta...
