On the Continuum Shape of Broad Absorption Line Quasars
نویسنده
چکیده
The continuum shape of 26 broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs is shown to be virtually identical to that of non-BAL QSOs when the spectra of the former are dereddened. A procedure for dereddening of BAL QSO spectra is introduced, based on measurement of the flux in three bands and determination of the colour excess in comparison with an unreddened spectrum. This method allows us to derive the type and amount of extinction. We show that reddening in high-ionization BAL QSOs is comparatively small and the range of extinction laws varies from Milky Way, LMC to SMC type. On the other hand, lowionization BAL QSOs seem to experience reddening which can be attributed to SMC type extinction alone. Comparison of the colour indices of composite spectra from Francis et al. (1991) and Zheng et al. (1997) with those derived from individual BAL QSO spectra shows that the Francis et al. (1991) composite might be a more suitable representative of an unreddened spectrum. In general, we conclude that the spectral energy distribution of normal QSOs can be used as an incident continuum shape for BAL QSOs.

Estimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks
A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...
متن کاملX-ray Absorption in Type II Quasars: Implications for the Equatorial Paradigm of Broad Absorption Line Quasars
In this article, the hydrogen column densities derived from X-ray observations of type II (hidden) quasars and broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs) are compared. These column densities represent the amount of absorbing material between the X-ray source and the observer. A sample of type II QSOs with strong narrow emission lines, weak UV continuum and no broad emission lines that also have de...
متن کاملUnconventional Agn from the Sdss
We discuss some of the most unusual active galactic nuclei (AGN) discovered to date by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS): the first broad absorption line quasar seen to exhibit He ii absorption, several quasars with extremely strong, narrow UV Fe ii emission, and an AGN with an unexplained and very strange continuum shape.
متن کاملThe average absorption properties of broad absorption line quasars at 800 < λ rest < 3000 Å , and the underlying physical parameters
Broad absorption line quasars (BALQs) present a large diversity in their broad absorption line (BAL) profiles. To investigate what physical parameters underlie this diversity, we construct a sample of BALQs which covers λrest ≈ 800–3000 Å, based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 quasar catalogue. The average BAL properties are evaluated by taking the ratios of average BALQ spectra ...
متن کاملThe Discovery of Soft X-ray Loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars
It is been known for more than a decade that BALQSOs (broad absorption line quasars) are highly attenuated in the X-ray regime compared to other quasars, especially in the soft band ( < 1 keV). Using X-ray selection techniques we have found “soft X-ray loud” BALQSOs that, by definition, have soft X-ray (0.3 keV) to UV (3000Å) flux density ratios that are higher than typical nonBAL radio quiet q...
