single roofed, indicating that the specimen was an immature. The skull and wing are now in the collection at Humboldt State College. This record is additional support for the assumption made by Cogswell (Condor, 54, 1952:117) that the northward movements of wandering vagrants of this species in the fall may be fairly commonplace, at least along the Pacific coast.--Row E. The late Middle Pleistocene hominin fossil record of eastern Asia: synthesis and review.
Traditionally, Middle Pleistocene hominin fossils that cannot be allocated to Homo erectus sensu lato or modern H. sapiens have been assigned to different specific taxa. For example, in eastern Asia, these hominin fossils have been classified as archaic, early, or premodern H. sapiens. An increasing number of Middle Pleistocene hominin fossils are currently being assigned to H. heidelbergensis....
متن کاملA Fossil and Zooarchaeological History of the Gopher Tortoise (gopherus Polyphemus) in the Southeastern United States
Specimens of fossil gopher tortoises (Gopherus) were collected from five late Pliocene, two early Pleistocene, five middle Pleistocene, and 52 late Pleistocene sites in 18 counties in Florida, one county in Georgia, three in South Carolina, and one in Mississippi. Occurrences of fossil Gopherus polyphemus in Lowndes County, Mississippi, and Charleston, Colleton, and Horry counties, South Caroli...
متن کاملFirst Fossil Record for the Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys Terrapin (emydidae), and Comments on the Fossil Record of Chrysemys Nelsoni (emydidae)
A nuchal bone and a first left costal bone from two different individuals represent the first fossil record for the diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin. The bones are from a Pleistocene deposit at Edisto Beach, Colleton County, South Carolina, a locality that is within the present range of M. terrapin. Fossil Chrysemys nelsoni recovered from the same deposit indicate that the ranges of Ch...
متن کاملClimate-driven range expansion and morphological evolution in a marine gastropod.
Little is known about the phenotypic consequences of global climate change, despite the excellent Pleistocene fossil record of many taxa. We used morphological measurements from extant and Pleistocene populations of a marine gastropod (Acanthinucella spirata) in conjunction with mitochondrial DNA sequence variation from living populations to determine how populations responded phenotypically to...
متن کاملPleistocene Felidae (mammalia, Carnivora) from the Kudaro Paleolithic Cave Sites in the Caucasus
The Kudaro Paleolithic site complex in Southern Ossetia includes five species of felids: Panthera onca gombaszoegensis, P. spelaea, P. pardus, Felis silvestris and possibly Lynx lynx. The fossil jaguar P. onca gombaszoegensis was identified from the lowest stratigraphic level of the Middle Pleistocene (Likhvian = Holsteinian Interglacial). Remains of P. pardus and Felis silvestris were recovere...
