چکیده

IEEE 802.16e devices may enter sleep mode to conserve energy. There has been some work studying how to schedule device’s packet transmissions to maximize the device’s sleep period while meeting associated QoS (quality of service) requirements. This paper proposes two schemes that attempt to save more energy for a given sleep schedule by accelerating or deferring scheduled packet transmissions with the intention to further reduce the frequency of transitions from sleep to active modes (states). Performance evaluation results indicate that the proposed schemes effectively reduce state transitions when compared with existing sleep scheduling schemes. Packet delays may also be improved in case of accelerating packet transmissions. Keywords—WiMAX; sleep scheduling; QoS; state transitions

An Overview of Group Key Management Issues in IEEE 802.16e Networks

The computer industry has defined the IEEE 802.16 family of standards that will enable mobile devices to access a broadband network as an alternative to digital subscriber line technology. As the mobile devices join and leave a network, security measures must be taken to ensure the safety of the network against unauthorized usage by encryption and group key management. IEEE 802.16e uses Multica...

A QoS Guaranteed Energy-Efficient Scheduling for IEEE 802.16e

Recently, the IEEE 802.16 standard (IEEE Std 802.16-2004, 2004), a solution to broadband wireless access commonly known as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), has been considered as a promising standard for next generation broadband wireless access networks. IEEE 802.16e (IEEE Std 802.16e-2005, 2005), also called Mobile WiMAX (Li et al., 2007), provides enhancements to IEEE...

A New Adaptive Energy Management Scheme in IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMAX

Energy management strategy is an indispensable component in the emerging IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX because Mobile Subscriber Stations are normally powered by a rechargeable battery. In this paper, we propose a new energy saving scheme by adjusting the sleep windows adaptively. Simulation results indicate that the new policy is able to reduce power consumption significantly with much less increa...

Enhanced Sleep Mode Operations for Energy Saving in IEEE 802.16e

The broadband wireless access (BWA) network, such as IEEE 802.16e, becomes more and more popular in recent years. According to the IEEE 802.16e specifications, mobile subscriber stations (MSSs) with energy constraints are allowed to switch to the sleep mode to reduce their power consumption. Considering a number of service connections on the MSS with different traffic characteristics and reques...

A Dynamic Sleep Interval Decision Scheme for Power-Saving with Minimum Delay in IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMAX

We observe that the state-of-the-art power-saving mechanisms (PSM) for IEEE 802.16e is neither optimal in terms of delay nor in terms of energy consumption. We propose a new PSM which achieves the optimality in terms of the average buffering delay without increasing energy consumption. In order to do so, we derive a formula which relates the average buffering delay to sleep intervals. Simulatio...
