Compact Disc: system aspects and modulation

In this artide we shall deal in more detail with the various faclors that had to be weighed one against the other in the design of the Compact Disc syslem. In particular we shall discuss the EFM modulation system ('EighHo-Fourteen Modulation'), which helps to produce the desired high information density on the disco lical to Bi from the disc and reconverts it to the orchestral sound. The system between COD and DECOD is thc actlla] transmission channef; Bi and Bo consist of 'channel bits'. Fig. 2 shows the encoding system in more detail.
