چکیده

There is an ongoing debate in the psychology of reasoning whether and how logic can be used to describe the human inference process. Many psychological findings indicate that humans deviate from classical logic inferences. Some researchers have proposed to use ternary logics instead to model human reasoning processes. In this article we re-analyze the famous Wason Selection Task that has been researched in more than 100 publications and can be regarded as one of the most important reasoning experiment in the psychology of reasoning. It investigates how participants check if a given conditional statement holds. Most cognitive modeling approaches have focused on explaining the general response pattern. Instead, we focus on the pattern generated by each participant. In particular, we conduct a meta-analysis to identify these patterns. Thereafter, we analyze these patterns. If there is a two-valued model of human reasoning processes, then there must be two-valued truth-tables that can generate the patterns. Finally, we show by a search through the space of all two-valued truth tables that there are patterns that cannot be explained by two-valued logics. However, these patterns can be explained, when extending the representation to three-valued logics.

Truth Values and Connectives in Some Non-Classical Logics

The question as to whether the propositional logic of Heyting, which was a formalization of Brouwer's intuitionistic logic, is finitely many valued or not, was open for a while (the question was asked by Hahn). Kurt Gödel (1932) introduced an infinite decreasing chain of intermediate logics, which are known nowadays as Gödel logics, for showing that the intuitionistic logic is not finitely (man...

Alternating Regular Tree Grammars in the Framework of Lattice-Valued Logic

In this paper, two different ways of introducing alternation for lattice-valued (referred to as {L}valued)  regular tree grammars and {L}valued top-down tree automata are compared. One is the way which defines the alternating regular tree grammar, i.e., alternation is governed by the non-terminals of the grammar and the other is the way which combines state with alternation. The first way is ta...

Forward Human Reasoning Modeled by Logic Programming Modeled by Classical Logic with Circumscription and Projection

Recently an approach to model human reasoning as studied in cognitive science by logic programming, has been introduced by Stenning and van Lambalgen and exemplified with the suppression task. We investigate this approach from the view of a framework where different logic programming semantics correspond to different translations of logic programs into formulas of classical two-valued logic ext...

Abduction in Human Reasoning

In this paper we contribute to bridging the gap between human reasoning as studied in Cognitive Science and commonsense reasoning based on formal logics and formal theories. In particular, the suppression task studied in Cognitive Science provides an interesting challenge problem for human reasoning based on logic. The work presented in the paper is founded on the recent approach by Stenning an...
