Optimal Belief Approximation

چکیده
In Bayesian statistics probability distributions express beliefs. However, for many problems the beliefs cannot be computed analytically and approximations of beliefs are needed. We seek a ranking function that quantifies how “embarrassing” it is to communicate a given approximation. We show that there is only one ranking under the requirements that (1) the best ranked approximation is the non-approximated belief and (2) that the ranking judges approximations only by their predictions for actual outcomes. We find that this ranking is equivalent to the Kullback-Leibler divergence that is frequently used in the literature. However, there seems to be confusion about the correct order in which its functional arguments, the approximated and non-approximated beliefs, should be used. The correct order ensures that the recipient of a communication is only deprived of the minimal amount of information. We hope that our elementary derivation settles the apparent confusion. We show for example that when approximating beliefs with Gaussian distributions the optimal approximation is given by moment matching. This is in contrast to many suggested computational schemes.

A Note on Belief Structures and S-approximation Spaces
We study relations between evidence theory and S-approximation spaces. Both theories have their roots in the analysis of Dempsterchr('39')s multivalued mappings and lower and upper probabilities, and have close relations to rough sets. We show that an S-approximation space, satisfying a monotonicity condition, can induce a natural belief structure which is a fundamental block in evidence theory...
متن کاملFaithful Approximations of Belief Functions
A conceptual foundation for approximation of belief functions is proposed and investi gated. It is based on the requirements of consistency and closeness. An optimal ap proximation is studied. Unfortunately, the computation of the optimal approximation turns out to be intractable. Hence, various heuristic methods are proposed and exper imantally evaluated both in terms of their accuracy and ...
متن کاملA Novel Successive Approximation Method for Solving a Class of Optimal Control Problems
This paper presents a successive approximation method (SAM) for solving a large class of optimal control problems. The proposed analytical-approximate method, successively solves the Two-Point Boundary Value Problem (TPBVP), obtained from the Pontryagin's Maximum Principle (PMP). The convergence of this method is proved and a control design algorithm with low computational complexity is present...
متن کاملPoint-based backup for decentralized POMDPs: complexity and new algorithms
Decentralized POMDPs provide an expressive framework for sequential multi-agent decision making. Despite their high complexity, there has been significant progress in scaling up existing algorithms, largely due to the use of pointbased methods. Performing point-based backup is a fundamental operation in state-of-the-art algorithms. We show that even a single backup step in the multi-agent setti...
متن کاملBelief Propagation for Min-cost Network Flow: Convergence & Correctness
We formulate a Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm in the context of the capacitated minimum-cost network flow problem (MCF). Unlike most of the instances of BP studied in the past, the messages of BP in the context of this problem are piecewise-linear functions. We prove that BP converges to the optimal solution in pseudo-polynomial time, provided that the optimal solution is unique and the prob...
