The Emergence of Classicality via Decoherence: Beyond the Caldeira-Legget Environment

چکیده

Maximally predictive states, as defined in recent work by Zurek, Habib and Paz, are studied for more elaborate environment models than a linear coupling to an oscillator bath (which has become known as the Caldeira-Leggett model). An environment model which includes spatial correlations in the noise is considered in the non-dissipative regime. The Caldeira-Leggett model is also re-considered in the context of an averaging procedure which produces a completely positive form for the quantum master equation. In both cases, the maximally predictive states for the harmonic oscillator are the coherent states, which is the same result found by Zurek, Habib and Paz for the Caldeira-Legget environment.

Decoherence and the (non)emergence of classicality

We prove that, regardless of the Hamiltonian, decoherence of subsystems in a preferred “pointer” basis does not occur for generic quantum states. This shows that the widespread belief that decoherence explains the emergence of classicality is incorrect, and that the emergence of classicality is only to be expected for a very small set of states.

The Emergence of Classicality via Decoherence Described by Lindblad Operators

Zurek, Habib and Paz [W. H. Zurek, S. Habib and J. P. Paz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70 (1993) 1187] have characterized the set of states of maximal stability defined as the set of states having minimum entropy increase due to interaction with an environment, and shown that coherent states are maximal for the particular environment model examined. To generalize these results, I consider entropy producti...

The quantum-to-classical transition: Bohr’s doctrine of classical concepts, emergent classicality, and decoherence

It is now widely accepted that environmental entanglement and the resulting decoherence processes play a crucial role in the quantum-to-classical transition and the emergence of “classicality” from quantum mechanics. To this extent, decoherence is often understood as signifying a break with the Copenhagen interpretation, and in particular with Bohr’s view of the indispensability of classical co...

Wigner Centennial: His Function, and Its Environmental Decoherence

In 1983, Wigner outlined a modified Schrödinger—von-Neumann equation of motion for macroobjects, to describe their typical coupling to the environment. This equation has become a principal model of environmental decoherence which is beleived responsible for the emergence of classicality in macroscopic quantum systems. Typically, this happens gradually and asymptotically after a certain characte...

The problem of identifying the system and the environment in the phenomenon of decoherence

The term ‘decoherence’ usually refers to the quantum process that supposedly turns a pure state into a mixed state, which is diagonal in a well-defined basis. The orthodox explanation of the phenomenon is given by the so-called environment-induced decoherence (EID) approach (Zurek 1982, 1993, 2003; Paz and Zurek 2002), according to which decoherence results from the interaction of an open quant...
