چکیده

Packet tracing is a popular and efficient method for accelerating ray tracing. However, packet traversal techniques become inefficient when they are applied to path tracing since the secondary rays are incoherent. In this paper, we present a simple technique for improving the coherency of secondary rays. This technique uses the same sequence of random numbers for generating secondary rays for all the pixels in each sample. This improves the efficiency of the packet tracing algorithm, but creates structured noise patterns in the image. We propose an interleaved sampling scheme that reduces the correlation in the noise and makes it virtually imperceptible in the final image. Coherent path tracing is unbiased, simple to implement and outperforms standard path tracing with packet tracing, while producing images with similar RMS error values.

Path Tracing on Massively Parallel Neuromorphic Hardware

Ray tracing on parallel hardware has recently benefit from significant advances in the graphics hardware and associated software tools. Despite this, the SIMD nature of graphics card architectures is only able to perform well on groups of coherent rays which exhibit little in the way of divergence. This paper presents SpiNNaker, a massively parallel system based on low power ARM cores, as an ar...

Monte Carlo Methods for Volumetric Light Transport Simulation

The wide adoption of path-tracing algorithms in high-end realistic rendering has stimulated many diverse research initiatives. In this paper we present a coherent survey of methods that utilize Monte Carlo integration for estimating light transport in scenes containing participating media. Our work complements the volume-rendering state-of-the-art report by Cerezo et al. [CPP∗05]; we review pub...

Sorted Deferred Shading for Production Path Tracing

Ray-traced global illumination (GI) is becoming widespread in production rendering but incoherent secondary ray traversal limits practical rendering to scenes that fit in memory. Incoherent shading also leads to intractable performance with production-scale textures forcing renderers to resort to caching of irradiance, radiosity, and other values to amortize expensive shading. Unfortunately, su...

Gradient-Domain Photon Density Estimation

The most common solutions to the light transport problem rely on either Monte Carlo (MC) integration or density estimation methods, such as uni& bi-directional path tracing or photon mapping. Recent gradient-domain extensions of MC approaches show great promise; here, gradients of the final image are estimated numerically (instead of the image intensities themselves) with coherent paths generat...

Efficient global illumination for dynamic scenes

The production of high quality animations which feature compelling lighting effects is computationally a very heavy task when traditional rendering approaches are used where each frame is computed separately. The fact that most of the computation must be restarted from scratch for each frame leads to unnecessary redundancy. Since temporal coherence is typically not exploited, temporal aliasing ...
