Amultiple - impact origin for the Moon
نویسنده
چکیده
The hypothesis of lunar origin by a single giant impact can explain some aspects of the Earth–Moon system. However, it is di cult to reconcile giant-impact models with the compositional similarity of the Earth and Moon without violating angular momentum constraints. Furthermore, successful giant-impact scenarios require very specific conditions such that they have a low probability of occurring. Here we present numerical simulations suggesting that the Moon could instead be the product of a succession of a variety of smaller collisions. In this scenario, each collision forms a debris disk around the proto-Earth that then accretes to form a moonlet. The moonlets tidally advance outward, and may coalesce to form the Moon. We find that sub-lunar moonlets are a common result of impacts expected onto the proto-Earth in the early Solar System and find that the planetary rotation is limited by impact angular momentum drain. We conclude that, assuming e cient merger of moonlets, a multiple-impact scenario can account for the formation of the Earth–Moon system with its present properties.

Abstract Background and Aims: Emotional state is one of the main factors affecting human behavior. Several factors can change people's emotional states. Studies have shown that different phases of moon can affect behavior and emotional state. Therefore, this study was carried out with the aim of determining the relationship between different phases of moon and the emotional st...

Objectives: The present study was carried out to investigate the relationship between different lunar phases and the occurrence of overdose attempted suicide. Method: The study was carried out for a period of three lunar years (Shaban 1416 to Shaban 1419) with patients admitted to the Intoxication Emergency Clinic at Imam Reza Hospital in Mashad. In this research, 13422 cases of suicide attempt...
متن کاملHf-W AND THE ISOTOPIC CRISIS FOR THE GIANT IMPACT ORIGIN OF THE MOON
Introduction: It has become clear over the last few years that the widely accepted model for the origin of the Earth-Moon system as the result of a Mars-sized giant impactor colliding with proto-Earth is inconsistent with a variety of new isotopic data. Generally, it is thought that the Earth and the Mars-sized Moonforming impactor were isotopically different (for mass independent isotopic vari...
متن کاملEarth's earliest atmospheres.
Earth is the one known example of an inhabited planet and to current knowledge the likeliest site of the one known origin of life. Here we discuss the origin of Earth's atmosphere and ocean and some of the environmental conditions of the early Earth as they may relate to the origin of life. A key punctuating event in the narrative is the Moon-forming impact, partly because it made Earth for a s...
متن کاملThe Composition and Evolution of a Geophysically Reasonable Moon Produced by a Giant Impact
Introduction: The magma ocean model for the early Moon’s evolution has been one of the most important and influential hypotheses to come out of the Apollo program. Recognizing that the earliest stages of a terrestrial planet’s evolution involve widespread melting, and attempting to understand what such a planetary-scale melting episode implies for geophysical and geochemical evolution, has been...
