چکیده

In recent years, much work has been devoted to a systematic study of polynomial identities certifying strict or non-strict positivity of a polynomial f on a basic closed set K ⊂ R. The interest in such identities originates not least from their importance in polynomial optimization. The majority of the important results requires the archimedean condition, which implies that K has to be compact. This paper introduces the technique of pure states into commutative algebra. We show that this technique allows an approach to most of the recent archimedean Stellensätze that is considerably easier and more conceptual than the previous proofs. In particular, we reprove and strengthen some of the most important results from the last years. In addition, we establish several such results which are entirely new. They are the first that allow f to have arbitrary, not necessarily discrete, zeros in K.

Gelfond and Khovanskii found a formula for the sum of the values of a Laurent polynomial over the zeros of a system of n Laurent polynomials in (C \ 0) . We expect that a similar formula holds in the case of exponential sums with real frequencies. Here we prove such a formula in dimension 1.

In 1853 Sylvester introduced a family of double sum expressions for two finite sets of indeterminates and showed that some members of the family are essentially the polynomial subresultants of the monic polynomials associated with these sets. A question naturally arises: What are the other members of the family? This paper provides a complete answer to this question. The technique that we devel...

We obtain extremal majorants and minorants of exponential type for a class of even functions on R which includes log |x| and |x|α, where −1 < α < 1. We also give periodic versions of these results in which the majorants and minorants are trigonometric polynomials of bounded degree. As applications we obtain optimal estimates for certain Hermitian forms, which include discrete analogues of the o...

On the degree growth in some polynomial dynamical systems and nonlinear pseudorandom number generators

In this paper we study a class of dynamical systems generated by iterations of multivariate polynomials and estimate the degree growth of these iterations. We use these estimates to bound exponential sums along the orbits of these dynamical systems and show that they admit much stronger estimates than in the general case and thus can be of use for pseudorandom number generation. Nonnegative Polynomials and Sums of Squares

A real polynomial in n variables is called nonnegative if it is greater than or equal to 0 at all points in R. It is a central question in real algebraic geometry whether a nonnegative polynomial can be written in a way that makes its nonnegativity apparent, i.e. as a sum of squares of polynomials (or more general objects). Algorithms to obtain such representations, when they are known, have ma...
