Heavy-traffic Limits for Polling Models with Exhaustive Service and Non-fcfs Service Order Policies

چکیده
We study cyclic polling models with exhaustive service at each queue under a variety of non-FCFS (first-come–first-served) local service orders, namely last-come–first-served with and without preemption, random-order-of-service, processor sharing, the multiclass priority scheduling with and without preemption, shortest-job-first, and the shortest remaining processing time policy. For each of these policies, we first express the waitingtime distributions in terms of intervisit-time distributions. Next, we use these expressions to derive the asymptotic waiting-time distributions under heavy-traffic assumptions, i.e. when the system tends to saturate. The results show that in all cases the asymptotic waiting-time distribution at queue i is fully characterized and of the form i , with and i independent, and where is gamma distributed with known parameters (and the same for all scheduling policies). We derive the distribution of the random variable i which explicitly expresses the impact of the local service order on the asymptotic waitingtime distribution. The results provide new fundamental insight into the impact of the local scheduling policy on the performance of a general class of polling models. The asymptotic results suggest simple closed-form approximations for the complete waitingtime distributions for stable systems with arbitrary load values.

Heavy Traffic Limit Theorems for Two Tandem Polling Stations
We consider two tandem single-server stations in heavy traffic. There are two job types and they visit both stations in order. The first station processes jobs in an exhaustive service or gated service fashion and the second station uses an arbitrary nonidling service discipline. The stations have zero switch-over times. We prove heavy traffic limit theorems for the two-dimensional total worklo...
متن کاملThe impact of scheduling policies on the waiting-time distributions in polling systems
We consider polling models consisting of a single server that visits the queues in a cyclic order. In the vast majority of papers that have appeared on polling models, it is assumed that at each of the individual queues, the customers are served on a first-come-first-served (FCFS) basis. In this paper, we study polling models where the local scheduling policy is not FCFS but instead is varied a...
متن کاملPolling systems in heavy traffic: Exhaustiveness of service policies
We study the expected delay in cyclic polling models with general ‘branching-type’ service disciplines. For this class of models, which contains models with exhaustive and gated service as special cases, we obtain closed-form expressions for the expected delay under standard heavy-traffic scalings. We identify a single parameter associated with the service discipline at each queue, which we cal...
متن کاملHeavy traffic analysis of polling models by mean value analysis
In this paper we present a new approach to derive heavy-traffic asymptotics for polling models. We consider the classical cyclic polling model with exhaustive or gated service at each queue, and with general service-time and switch-over time distributions, and study its behavior when the load tends to one. For this model, we explore the recently proposed mean value analysis (MVA), which takes a...
متن کاملExpected Delay Analysis of Polling Systems in Heavy Traffic
We study the expected delay in a cyclic polling model with mixtures of exhaustive and gated service in heavy traffic. We obtain closed-form expressions for the mean delay under standard heavy-traffic scalings, providing new insights into the behaviour of polling systems in heavy traffic. The results lead to excellent approximations of the expected waiting times in practical heavy-load scenarios...
