The effect of conjugated and unconjugated bile acids on water and electrolyte absorption in the human jejunum.

چکیده
1. The effect of conjugated and unconjugated bile acids in various concentrations on the absorption of water, sodium and chloride in the proximal jejunum in man has been studied using a perfusion system incorporating a proximal occluding balloon. 2. Unconjugated cholic acid and its glycine and taurine conjugates had no significant effect on water and electrolyte absorption. Unconjugated deoxycholic acid significantly inhibited water and electrolyte absorption at 3 mM concentration and net secretion occurred at concentrations of 5 mM, 7 mM and 10 mM. Similar results were found when taurodeoxycholic and glycodeoxycholic acid solutions were used. A greater effect was noted when higher concentrations of bile acids were used. 3. Unconjugated chenodeoxycholic acid caused net water and electrolyte secretion at 3 mM concentration and this effect became more marked with higher bile acid concentrations. Inhibition of absorption also occurred with taurochenodeoxycholic acid in a concentration of 3 mM and net secretion occurred at a concentration of 10

Effect of glycine-conjugated bile acids with and without lecithin on water and glucose absorption in perfused human jejunum.
Perfusion studies were performed in healthy volunteers to test whether the secretory effect of conjugated bile acids, previously shown for the colon, was also present in the jejunum. A perfusion system with a proximal occlusive balloon (and continuous aspiration of duodenal secretions) was used; isotonic test solutions contained glycine-conjugated bile acids with or without lecithin. Fluid move...
متن کاملInhibitory effect of unconjugated bile acids on the intestinal transport of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in rat jejunum in vitro.
The effect of the unconjugated bile acids, cholic, deoxycholic, chenodeoxycholic, and ursodeoxycholic acids, and of the conjugated bile acid taurocholic acid on the mucosal-to-serosal transport and tissue uptake of the naturally occurring folate derivative, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-CH3H4PteGlu) was examined in everted sacs of rat jejunum. Each of the unconjugated bile acids examined inhibite...
متن کاملUnconjugated bilirubin and the bile from light exposed Gunn rats inhibit intestinal water and electrolyte absorption.
Jaundiced babies undergoing phototherapy often develop diarrhoea. The cause of it is still uncertain. Increasing evidence supports a role of a secretory mechanism for the diarrhoea. We therefore studied the effects of bile from congenitally jaundiced rats undergoing phototherapy and of unconjugated bilirubin on rat small intestine in vivo and in vitro. Results suggest that: (1) the bile from ho...
متن کاملIntraluminal precipitation of bile acids in stagnant loop syndrome.
The postprandial concentrations of free and conjugated bile acids were measured in total content and micellar phase of jejunal aspirates from nine patients with steatorrhoea due to the stagnant loop syndrome and from 11 normal controls. Aspirates from the stagnant loop syndrome patients, but not from the normal controls, had a high concentration of free (unconjugated) bile acids. There was a re...
متن کاملEvidence for an anion exchange mechanism for uptake of conjugated bile acid from the rat jejunum.
Absorption of conjugated bile acids from the small intestine is very efficient. The mechanisms of jejunal absorption are not very well understood. The aim of this study was to clarify the mechanism of absorption of conjugated bile acid at the apical membrane of jejunal epithelial cells. Brush-border membrane vesicles from intestinal epithelial cells of the rat were prepared. Absorption of two t...
