چکیده

We report results of a near–infrared imaging survey of L977, a dark cloud in Cygnus seen in projection against the plane of the Milky Way. We use measurements of the near–infrared color excess and positions of the 1628 brightest stars in our survey to measure directly dust extinction through the cloud following the method described by Lada et al. (1994). We spatially convolve the individual extinction measurements with a square filter 90 in size to construct a large–scale map of extinction in the cloud. We integrate over this map to derive a total mass of ML977 = (660 ± 30) (D/500pc) M and, via a comparison of source counts with predictions of a galactic model, estimate a distance to L977 of 500 ± 100 pc. We find a correlation between the measured dispersion in our extinction determinations and the extinction which is very similar to that found for the dark cloud IC 5146 in a previous study. We interpret this as evidence for the presence of structure on scales smaller than the 90 resolution of our extinction map. Correlation Between Gas and Dust in Molecular Clouds : L 977

We report observations of the J = (1–0) CO molecular emission line toward the L977 molecular cloud. To study the correlation between CO emission and dust extinction we constructed a Gaussian smoothed map of the infrared extinction measured by Alves et al. (1998) at the same angular resolution (50) as our molecular–line observations. This enabled a direct comparison of CO integrated intensities ...

Near-Infrared Extinction and Molecular Cloud Structure

A little more than a decade has passed since the advent of large format infrared array cameras opened a new window on molecular cloud research. This powerful observational tool has enabled dust extinction and column density maps of molecular clouds to be constructed with unprecedented precision, depth and angular resolution. Near-infrared extinction studies can achieve column density dynamic ra...

A COMPLETE Look at The Use of IRAS Emission Maps to Estimate Extinction and Dust Temperature

We have created new dust temperature and column density maps of Perseus, Ophiuchus and Serpens using 60 and 100 μm data from the IRIS recalibration of IRAS data. We describe an optimized method for finding the dust temperature, emissivity spectral index, and optical depth using optical and NIR extinction maps. The creation of these temperature and extinction maps (covering tens of square degree...

Dust Emission from the Perseus Molecular Cloud

Using far-infrared emission maps taken by IRAS and Spitzer and a near-infrared extinction map derived from 2MASS data, we have made dust temperature and column density maps of the Perseus molecular cloud. We show that the emission from transiently heated very small grains (VSGs) and the big grain dust emissivity vary as a function of extinction and dust temperature, with higher dust emissivitie...

The “true” Column Density Distribution in Star-forming Molecular Clouds

We use the COMPLETE Survey’s observations of the Perseus star-forming region to assess and intercompare three methods for measuring column density in molecular clouds: near-infrared extinction mapping; thermal emission mapping in the far-IR; and mapping the intensity of CO isotopologues. Overall, the structures shown by all three tracers are morphologically similar, but important differences ex...
