Exact and Approximate Analytical Modeling of an FLBM-Based All-Optical Packet Switch

چکیده
This paper develops both exact and approximate models for the analysis of an all-optical packet switch based on a fiber-loop buffer memory (FLBM). The switch structure and operation is based on the fully shared buffer architecture of the Research and Development in Advanced Communications in Europe—ATM Optical Switching (RACE-ATMOS) project [1], which uses individual wavelengths to store fixed-length packets in the fiber-loop buffer. An exact model of the switch has been developed [2], which can be used to determine the blocking performance of the switch and obtain both its throughput and packet loss characteristics. It has been used to study the switch performance under different loading conditions and for different values of the key design parameters of the switch. This model is difficult to use for studying large switches of this kind because of computational complexities. To tackle this problem, an approximate queuing model has also been presented, which may be used to study the performance of large switches of this kind. The results obtained by the two methods are compared to confirm that the approximate model works well under typical loading conditions of the switch.

Design of Arrayed Waveguide Grating based Optical Switch for High Speed Optical Networks
This paper demonstrates the design of an Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWG) based optical switch. In the design both physical and network layer analysis is performed. The physical layer power and noise analysis is done to obtain Bit Error Rate (BER). This has been found that at the higher bit rates, BER is not affected with number of buffer modules. Network layer analysis is done to obtain perfor...
متن کاملExact emulation of a priority queue with a switch and delay lines
All-optical packet switched networking is hampered by the problem of realizing viable queues for optical packets. Packets can be buffered in delay lines, but delay lines do not functionally emulate queues from an input-output point of view. In this paper we consider the problem of exact emulation of a priority queue of size K using a switching system comprised of a switch of size (M +1)× (M +1)...

متن کاملDimensioning shared-per-node recirculating fiber delay line buffers in an optical packet switch
Optical buffering based on fiber delay lines (FDLs) has been proposed as a means for contention resolution in an optical packet switch. In this article, we propose a queuing model for feedback-type shared-per-node recirculating FDL optical buffers in asynchronous optical switching nodes. In this model, optical packets are allowed to recirculate over FDLs as long as the total number of recircula...
