Noise-induced phase transition in the model of human virtual stick balancing

چکیده
Humans face the task of balancing dynamic systems near an unstable equilibrium repeatedly throughout their lives. The task of inverted pendulum (stick) balancing (Fig. 1a) is an increasingly popular paradigm of studying human control behavior in such situations [1]. In particular, much research has been aimed at understanding the mechanisms of discontinuous, or intermittent control in the context of human balance control [2, 3]. The present paper deals with one of the recent developments in the theory of human intermittent control, namely, the double-well model of noise-driven control activation. The analyzed model of inverted pendulum under control of human operator [4] includes three dynamical variables: stick angle θ, cart velocity υ, and an order parameter ξ describing the cognitive state of the operator in regards to the controlled system. Their dynamics are defined by the equations

Phase transition of the dry friction between crystalline surfaces induced by normal load
A major source of energy dissipation and surface wear is the kinetic friction at the interfaces of sliding bodies. Traditionally, on a macroscopic scale, this undesirable effect is reduced with lubricating the surfaces by introducing oil into their interface. An interesting phenomenon, called superlubricity, has been reported on a nanometer scale where dry (without lubricant oil) fruition and w...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Cation-Induced Substrate Configuration and Enzymatic Activity of Phosphatidate Phosphohydrolase from Human Liver
The mechanism by which bi-and trivalent cations affect human liver phosphatidatephosphohydrolase (PAP) activity was investigated. Bivalent cations up to 1 mM increased PAP activity whereas at higher concentrations the activity of the enzyme decreased. The stimulatory concentration for trivalent cations such as Al3+ and Cr3+, however, was much lower being 2 m M and 1 m M, respectively. All catio...

When some granular material contained into a silo is pushed upwards with a piston, an irregular stick-slip motion of the system of grains is observed. We show how one can adapt the 'Scalar Arching Model' (sam) – proposed as a model for giant stress fluctuations in silos – in order to describe this stick-slip phenomenon. As a function of the sensitivity of the system to mechanical noise, the sys...
متن کاملTo react or not to react? Intrinsic stochasticity of human control in virtual stick balancing
Understanding how humans control unstable systems is central to many research problems, with applications ranging from quiet standing to aircraft landing. Increasingly, much evidence appears in favour of event-driven control hypothesis: human operators only start actively controlling the system when the discrepancy between the current and desired system states becomes large enough. The event-dr...

Background & Aim: Transition from studentship to working life is a stressful and challenging event. The concept of transition is important in nursing education, management, and practice issues. However, despite its supreme importance, there are certain ambiguities about the concept of transition in nursing. The aim of this study was to analyze the concept of transition in the context of nursi...
