Sample Sizes to Compare Two Poisson Rates
نویسنده
چکیده
In this note, procedures for determining the sample sizes needed to compare the rates of two Poisson populations to achieve a pre-specifi ed power at a given ratio of the rates are proposed. The fi rst method relies on a conditional uniformly most powerful test (CUMPT) which leads to sample sizes that will guarantee the desired power, but at the cost of using more units than necessary. The second method relies on a normal approximation and may not always guarantee that the desired power will be achieved, but generally yields a power close to the pre-specifi ed value and prescribes smaller sample sizes than the CUMPT-based method. Properties of the procedures are examined using simulation studies. The particular applicability and motivating situations leading to these procedures are in colon cancer research. Illustrations of the applicability of the procedures in studies dealing with tumor counts in mice are presented.

A Comparison of Two Test Statistics for Poisson Overdispersion/Underdispersion
Within the family of zero-inflated Poisson distributions, the data has Poisson distribution if any only if the mean equals the variance. In this paper we compare two closely related test statistics constructed based on this idea. Our results show that although these two tests are asymptotically equivalent under the null hypothesis and are equally efficient, one test is always more efficient tha...

Background and purpose: Due to the increasing information about illnesses and deaths, classified map is of appropriate methods for analyzing this type of data. Standardized infection rates are commonly used in disease mapping but had many defects. This study aimed to compare the Poisson regression models and empirical Bayes models to prepare geographical map of tuberculosis incidence in Mazanda...
متن کاملAll maps of parameter estimates are misleading.
Maps are frequently used to display spatial distributions of parameters of interest, such as cancer rates or average pollutant concentrations by county. It is well known that plotting observed rates can have serious drawbacks when sample sizes vary by area, since very high (and low) observed rates are found disproportionately in poorly-sampled areas. Unfortunately, adjusting the observed rates ...
متن کاملAnalysis of two production inventory systems with buffer, retrials and different production rates
This paper considers the comparison of two ðs; SÞ production inventory systems with retrials of unsatisfied customers. The time for producing and adding each item to the inventory is exponentially distributed with rate b. However, a production rate ab higher than b is used at the beginning of the production. The higher production rate will reduce customers’ loss when inventory level appro...
متن کاملWeighted CUSUM Control Charts for Monitoring Inhomogeneous Poisson Processes with Varying Sample Sizes
Monitoring inhomogeneous Poisson processes with varying sample sizes has attracted considerable attention recently in both industrial quality control and public health surveillance. One of the key challenges in these applications is that a change in incidence rate may be masked by changes of sample sizes. The conventional Poisson cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart designed for detecting a pre-specifi...
