photochemical quenching (q NPQ ) was measured using a pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer. The q NPQ The possible interaction of two stresses, UV-B radiincreased with increasing Cd, while the combination ation and cadmium, applied simultaneously, was of cadmium and UV-B reduced the q NPQ compared to investigated in Brassica napus L. cv. Plants were grown in with UV-B at no or low Cd concentrations (0 mM, 0.5 mM nutrient solution containing CdCl 2 , (0, 0.5, 2 or 5 mM) CdCl 2 ), but not at the higher Cd concentrations used and irradiated with photosynthetically active radiation (2 mM, 5 mM CdCl 2 ). Thus in some instances there (PAR, 400–700 nm, 800 mmol m−2 s−1) with or withappeared to be a UV-B and Cd interaction, while in out supplemental ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280– others plant response could be attributed to either 320 nm, 15 kJ m−2 d−1, weighted irradiance). After treatment alone. 14 d of treatment, the most pronounced effects were found at 2 and 5 mM CdCl 2 with and without supple

The impact of drought stress at different stages of development on water relations, stomatal density and quality changes of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

ABSTRACT- To investigate the effect of draught stress on water relations, stomatal density, chlorophyll content and yield of rapeseed, an experiment was done with four levels of drought stress including L1 (Field Capacity, FC), L2 (70% Available Water Content, AWC), L3 (50% AWC), and L4 (30% AWC), within three growth stages- including stem elongation (T1), onset of flowering (T2) and silique fo...

Morpho-physiological Characteristics of Brassica napus L. Under Cadmium Stress

Cadmium as a heavy metal is also considered as a serious threat for the environment. This element is accumulated in soil through industrial processes as well as phosphate fertilizers and aggregates into the food chain. This study was conducted in order to investigate the different levels of cadmium effects on growth features of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) plants. Root and shoot weight and heig...

Photoinduced effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on Brassica napus (Canola) during germination and early seedling development.

It has recently been demonstrated that light dramatically enhances the toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to the duckweed Lemna gibba L. G-3 (L. Ren, X.-D. Huang, B.J. McConkey, D.G. Dixon, and B.M. Greenberg, 1994, Ecotoxicol. Environ. Saf. 28, 160-171). To extend this research to terrestrial plants, Brassica napus L. (oil seed rape) seeds were germinated in the presence of th...

Effects of nutrient supply on photosynthesis and pigmentation in Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta): responses to short-term stress

The effects of nutrient supply on photosynthesis (estimated as chlorophyll fluorescence), chlorophyll content, biomass yield and proximate chemical composition of tank cultivated Ulva lactuca L. (Chlorophyta) were evaluated. To assess the effect of nutrient supply on resistance capacity against short-term stress, algae grown in high nutrient supply (HNS) fishpond effluents and in low nutrient s...

Effect of UV-B radiation on photosynthetic pigments and UV-absorbing compounds of three different soybean cultivars (Glycine max L.).

The effects of UV-B radiation on the amount of chlorophyll a, b, carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and polyphenols of three soybean cultivars was studied. After germination in the incubator, plants were put in pots of soil and during 3 weeks and irrigated with Hoagland solution every day. After 3 weeks, plants were exposed to UV-B for 20 min every day for a week. In each cultivar, UV-B red...
