Mergers of Galaxies from an HI Perspective

چکیده
Hi spectral line mapping studies are a unique probe of morphologically peculiar systems. Not only does HI imaging often reveal peculiarities that are totally unsuspected at optical wavelengths, but it opens a kinematic window into the outer dynamics of these systems that is unmatched at any other wavelength. In this review I attempt to summarize what we have learned from such studies, and what we may hope to learn from them in the future.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملHow Dry Are Red Mergers?
The focus of current research in galaxy evolution has increasingly turned to understanding the effect that mergers have on the evolution of systems on the red sequence. For those interactions purported to occur dissipationlessly (so called “dry mergers”), it would appear that the role of gas is minimal. However, if these mergers are not completely dry, then even low levels of gas may be detecta...
متن کاملKinematic Evidence of Minor Mergers in Normal Sa Galaxies
A detailed study of nearby, morphologically normal Sa galaxies reveals that about half show some spectrocopic evidence for kinematically distinct components despite their undisturbed optical appearance. In eight of nine objects mapped in the 21 cm HI line, the HI distribution extends far outside the optical disk and warps of the HI disk are complex. The multiwavelength evidence can be interpret...
متن کاملMolecular Gas Depletion and Starbursts in Luminous Infrared Galaxy Mergers
Most luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) are closely interacting/merging systems rich in molecular gas. We study here the relationship between the stage of the galaxy-galaxy interactions, the molecular gas mass, and the star formation rate as deduced from the infrared luminosity LIR in LIGs. We find a correlation between the CO(1-0) luminosity (a measure of molecular mass M(H2)) and the projected...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Dwarf-Irregular Galaxy NGC 1569: A Kinematic Study of the Stars and Gas
The evolution and formation of dwarf galaxies has great importance to our knowledge of cosmological history from the Big Bang through the present day structure we observe in our local universe. Dwarf galaxies are believed to be the “building blocks” of larger galaxies, which implies that interactions and mergers of these small systems must have occurred frequently in the early universe. There i...
