Size Evolution of Early-Type Galaxies and Massive Compact Objects as the Dark Matter

چکیده
The dramatic size evolution of early-type galaxies from z ∼ 2 to 0 poses a new challenge in the theory of galaxy formation, which may not be explained by the standard picture. It is shown here that the size evolution can be explained if the non-baryonic cold dark matter is composed of compact objects having a mass scale of ∼ 10M⊙. This form of dark matter is consistent with or only weakly constrained by the currently available observations. The kinetic energy of the dark compact objects is transferred to stars by dynamical friction, and stars around the effective radius are pushed out to larger radii, resulting in a pure size evolution. This scenario has several good properties to explain the observations, including the ubiquitous nature of size evolution and faster disappearance of higher density galaxies.

On the Size and Comoving Mass Density Evolution of Early-type Galaxies
We present a simple, empirically motivated model that simultaneously predicts the evolution of the mean size and the comoving mass density of massive (> 10 M⊙) early-type galaxies from z = 2 to the present. First we demonstrate that some size evolution of the population can be expected simply due to the continuous emergence of early-type galaxies. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data reveal...
متن کاملMild Velocity Dispersion Evolution of Spheroid-like Massive Galaxies since Z ∼ 2
Making use of public spectra from Cimatti et al. (2008), we measure for the first time the velocity dispersion of spheroid-like massive (M ⋆ ∼ 10 11 M ⊙) galaxies at z ∼ 1.6. By comparing with galaxies of similar stellar mass at lower redshifts, we find evidence for a mild evolution in velocity dispersion, decreasing from ∼ 240 km s −1 at z ∼ 1.6 down to ∼ 180 km s −1 at z ∼ 0. Such mild evolut...

متن کاملRevisiting the Bulge-halo Conspiracy I: Dependence on Galaxy Properties and Halo Mass
We carry out a systematic investigation of the total mass density profile of massive (logMstar/M⊙ & 11.3) early-type galaxies and its dependence on galactic properties and host halo mass with the aid of a variety of lensing/dynamical data and largemock galaxy catalogs. The latter are produced via semi-empiricalmodels that, by design, are based on just a few basic input assumptions. Galaxies, wi...
متن کاملGalaxy threshing and the origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster
A recent all-object spectroscopic survey centred on the Fornax cluster of galaxies, has discovered a population of sub-luminous and extremely compact members, called “ultra-compact dwarf” (UCD) galaxies. In order to clarify the origin of these objects, we have used self-consistent numerical simulations to study the dynamical evolution a nucleated dwarf galaxy would undergo if orbiting the cente...
