Optimal limited authority for principal
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper studies a principal-agent problem where the only commitment for the uninformed principal is to restrict the set of decisions she makes following a report by the informed agent. We show that an ex ante optimal equilibrium for the principal corresponds to a finite partition of the state space, and each retained decision is ex post suboptimal for the principal, biased toward the agent’s preference. Generally an optimal equilibrium does not maximize the number of decisions the principal can credibly retain. Compared to no commitment, limited authority improves the quality of communication from the agent. As a result, it can give the principal a higher expected payoff than delegating the decision to the agent. JEL Classification: C72; D82; D83; L22

Delegation and incentives
This article analyzes the relation between authority and incentives. It extends the standard principal-agent model by a project selection stage in which the principal can either delegate the choice of project to the agent or keep the authority. The agent’s subsequent choice of effort depends both on monetary incentives and the selected project. We find that the consideration of effort incentive...
متن کاملFS IV 02 – 26 Delegation versus Authority
Delegation versus Authority by Daniel Krähmer The paper studies the role of delegation and authority within a principal-agent relation in which a non-contractible action has to be taken. The agent has private information relevant for the principal, but has policy preferences different from the principal. Consequently, an information revelation problem arises. We contribute to the literature by ...
متن کاملContracting for Information under Imperfect Commitment
We study optimal contracting under imperfect commitment in a model with an uninformed principal and an informed agent. The principal can commit to pay the agent for his advice but retains decision-making authority. Under an optimal contract, the principal should (a) never induce the agent to fully reveal what he knows even though this is feasible and (b) never pay the agent for imprecise info...
متن کاملThe Cost of Incentives under Disagreement
This paper identifies a new cost of pay-for-performance incentives when principal and agent may disagree on the optimal course of action. In particular, pay-for-performance gives the agent a reason to disobey the principal, and thus act against his principal’s interests, when the two of them disagree. In other words, high-powered incentives may decrease the agent’s ‘zone of acceptance’ (Simon 1...
متن کاملShared Control and Strategic Communication
This paper studies the optimal allocation of decision rights between an uninformed principal and an informed agent when interdependent activities need to be adapted to local conditions. While the principal cares only about overall pro ts the agent may favor higher, or lower, levels for each activity than the pro t-maximizing level. The principal has limited commitment power and can only commit ...
