Letter to the editor: Phosphorus as predictive factor for erectile dysfunction in middle aged men: A cross sectional study in Korea; Methodological issues to avoid prediction fallacy

چکیده
To the editor: We read the paper written by Min et al. [1] and published in Investigative and Clinical Urology in 2016. The authors aimed to study the effect of serum phosphorus on erectile dysfunction (ED) and the relationship with other clinical variables. It was concluded that phosphorus is a significant predictor of ED and a strong factor that can be modified in middle age. However, although this was a valuable investigation and its findings were very interesting, some methodological issues should be considered. First, Min et al. [1] evaluated the predictive performance of serum phosphorus on ED in a cross-sectional study, whereas longitudinal studies are most important for making assumptions for clinical prediction models [2]. In other words, the temporality assumption (the dependent variable has to occur after the independent variable) must be ensured in the prediction model. Thus, prediction models resulting from cross-sectional designs can be misleading [2,3]. Second, considering the predictive performance of serum phosphorus on ED to be significant is an optimistic interpretation. The authors reply: Phosphorus as predictive factor for erectile dysfunction in middle aged men: A cross sectional study in Korea
To the editor: Our study was cross-sectional study as you say. As we mentioned in the limitations of this study, the cross-sectional design rules out the evaluation of causality and may have issues of temporality among the variables. We agree with your opinion. Our conclusions are somewhat exaggerated. Now, we re-announce to our readers that our research is about the potential relevancy of phos...
متن کاملPhosphorus as predictive factor for erectile dysfunction in middle aged men: A cross sectional study in Korea
PURPOSE High serum inorganic phosphorus level is related with atherosclerosis and an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. At the same time, the association of phosphorus with erectile dysfunction (ED) is not well reported. We studied the effect of serum phosphorus on ED and the relationship with other clinical variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS From March to September 2013, 1,899 police men...
متن کاملLetter to Editor: Positive predictive value of diabetes mellitus risk assessment
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important public health challenge [1 ].Different studies predicted that the frequency of diabetic patients will be increased to 642 million throughout the world by 2040 [2]. A notable percentage of diabetic patients are not aware of their disease (approximately 30% in Iran) [3]. Lag in the diagnosis of DM raises the expense of controlling disease and makes the progn...
