Evaluating soft tissue simulation in maxillofacial surgery using preoperative and postoperative CT scans

چکیده
One of the most important issue in soft tissue modeling is to assess the quality of the simulations. A validation protocol is presented based on two CT scans of the patient acquired before and after craniomaxillofacial surgery. The actual bone repositioning realized during the intervention are accurately measured and reproduced. An evaluation of the soft tissue deformation is then computed using a finite element model of the face. The simulations are therefore compared, qualitatively and quantitatively, with the actual outcome of the surgery. This protocol enables to rigorously evaluate different modeling methods, and to assess the clinical relevance of soft tissue simulation in maxillofacial surgery. D 2004 CARS and Elsevier B.V. Soft Tissue Prediction in Computer Assisted Maxillofacial Surgery Planning A Quantitative Evaluation of Histomechanical Modeling using Pre- and Postoperative CT-Data
The aim of our work is to provide maxillofacial surgeons with a computer assisted 3D planning environment for complex bone relocations, facilitating a preoperative assessment of functional as well as esthetic rehabilitation. On this account we are developing an interactive simulation and visualization system and try to establish a robust modeling framework based on a biomechanical soft tissue m...

The aim of our work is to provide maxillofacial surgeons with an integrated osteotomy planning system for complex bone relocations, facilitating a preoperative assessment of functional as well as æsthetic rehabilitation. On this account we try to establish a robust modeling approach based on a histomechanical soft tissue model that reliably predicts the postoperative facial appearance. For two ...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Relationship between Mandibular Impacted Wisdom Teeth and Mandibular Canal in Preoperative Panoramic and Postoperative Complication
Background & Aims: Before the surgery of lower impacted third molars, it is essential to evaluate the relationship of the roots to mandibular canal using radiographies in order to avoid postoperative complications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of panoramic radiographs in assessing this relationship. Methods: This was a prospective study. The study population consist...
متن کاملThe application of digital model surgery in the treatment of dento-maxillofacial deformities
A retrospective study was conducted to explore the application of digital model surgery in the treatment of dento-maxillofacial deformities. Fifteen patients with dento-maxillofacial deformities were enrolled in this study. A digital craniomaxillofacial-dentition model was established by combining three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) and laser-scanned dentition models. Based on this ...
متن کاملRealistic modeling of elasto-mechanical properties of soft tissue and its evaluation
Computer–based techniques for the simulation of craniofacial surgical procedures and for the prediction of the surgical outcome have been shown to be very useful. However, the assessment of the accuracy of the simulated surgical outcome is difficult. In this paper, a technique is described which allows to compare the simulated surgical outcome and the actual surgical result. The surgery simulat...
