Dilute and concentrated phases of vesicles at thermal equilibrium

چکیده
A quatemary system made of an ionic surfactant (SDS), octanol, water and sodium chloride has been investigated. We present experimental results that demonstrate the existence of a phase of vesicles at thermal equilibrium. We show that vesicles can be prepared both in a dilute regime leading to an isotropic liquid phase of low viscosity and in a concentrated regime leading to a phase of close packed vesicles (probably multilayered) exhibiting high viscosity and viscoelasti-

Equilibrium Onions ?
– We demonstrate the possibility of a stable equilibrium multi-lamellar (“onion”) phase in pure lamellar systems (no excess solvent) due to a sufficiently negative Gaussian curvature modulus. The onion phase is stabilized by non-linear elastic moduli coupled to a polydisperse size distribution (Apollonian packing) to allow space-filling without appreciable elastic distortion. This model is comp...
متن کاملFormation of Protocell-like Vesicles in a Thermal Diffusion Column
Many of the properties of bilayer membranes composed of simple single-chain amphiphiles seem to be well-suited for a potential role as primitive cell membranes. However, the spontaneous formation of membranes from such amphiphiles is a concentration-dependent process in which a significant critical aggregate concentration (cac) must be reached. Since most scenarios for the prebiotic synthesis o...
متن کاملMorphological and Thermal Flux Analysis in as-Cast Al Alloy after Swarf Addition
In this research, effect of swarf addition on the microstructure of die cast aluminum A380 alloy and the possibility of altering the alloy structure in the metallic die has been studied. The microstructure mainly consists of the α-phase, eutectic, intermetallic compounds and porosity. Since the alloy solidifies under non-equilibrium conditions, the Scheil equation with exact amount of equilibri...
متن کاملCritical phenomena and thermodynamics of dilute aqueous sodium chloride to 823 K.
Semiempirical equations are developed that represent the behavior of dilute solutions of NaCl in water (steam) in the range 723-823 K where ion pairing is extensive. This supplements the equations given earlier for more concentrated solutions. In this temperature range the system NaCl/H(2)O shows critical behavior with two phases below the critical pressure. The equations for the dilute solutio...
متن کاملComparison of Thermal Dispersion Effects for Single and two Phase Analysis of Heat Transfer in Porous Media
The present work involves numerical simulation of a steady, incompressible forcedconvection fluid flow through a matrix of porous media between two parallel plates at constanttemperature. A Darcy model for the momentum equation was employed. The mathematical model forenergy transport was based on single phase equation model which assumes local thermal equilibriumbetween fluid and solid phases. ...
