Paradoxical Emboli Secondary to Hepatic Pathology: Common or Coincidental?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Paradoxical cerebral emboli from cardiac and pulmonary sources are well described in the peer-reviewed literature. We outline a case with a hepatic etiology and describe diagnostic and management options. Though this paper represents the first documentation of such, we believe that transpulmonary shunting with concurrent paradoxical cerebral microemboli is more prevalent than recognized. We introduce this case report to compel practitioners to consider paradoxical emboli in selected cirrhotic patients since it can often be difficult to elicit subtle neurologic changes on clinical examination of patients with end stage liver disease.

Preoperative Emboli in a Pregnant Woman with Myxoma
The left atrium is the most common location of myxomas, which are benign tumors. Only a few cases of myxomas in pregnancies have been reported. Our thorough medical literature search showed only 17 reported cases in the course of pregnancy. Myxomas during pregnancy and in the preterm period constitute a serious phenomenon that can mimic an early sign of a life-threatening pathology like severe ...
متن کاملParadoxical air embolism during hepatic resection.
Systemic venous air embolism is a serious complication in patients with chronic liver disease having liver surgery. Intrapulmonary arteriovenous shunting can permit air emboli to pass into the systemic circulation. We describe a case of paradoxical air embolism detected by transoesophageal echocardiography in a patient with cirrhosis who was having a hepatic resection.
متن کاملNeurologic Manifestation as Initial Presentation in a Case of Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia
Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), or Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome is an uncommon autosomal dominant multi-organ condition of vascular dysplasias. We describe a 19 year old Indian female who presented with cerebral abscess secondary to paradoxical emboli from pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) associated with HHT. Cerebral, pulmonary, hepatic and gastrointestinal involvement...
متن کاملInfarction of the human liver.
The rarity of hepatic infarction in the human being is commonly explained as due to the double blood supply via the hepatic artery and the portal vein. This explanation cannot be accepted, because, if the arterial blood supply alone is arrested the portal blood supply does not protect the liver from infarction. The factor of importance is that the arterial blood supply comes by three different ...
متن کاملارتباط شدت آمبولی ریه در سی تی آنژیوگرافی با یافتههای ECG در بیماران مبتلا به آمبولی حاد ریه
Background & Aims: The most common diagnostic modality for pulmonary emboli is CT angiography (CTA). Because of the availability and inexpensiveness, taking an electrocardiogram (ECG) is the first step in patients suspicious to pulmonary emboli. However, ECG does not provide any sensitive or specific manifestations for diagnosis of pulmonary emboli. We aim to evaluate the correlation between...
