چکیده

Although interface metaphors are used extensively in user interface design, there is an increasing need to identify and develop more effective metaphors. This need arises from the fact that information technology is being utilized by a wide variety of users (e.g., customers) who interact in a number of different domains (e.g., electronic commerce arena). The literature for this study includes metaphor theory, metaphorical design, interface metaphor usability, and mental model theory. This experimental study consisted of two factors: mode of interface and mental model type. Three types of information retention were measured: textually explicit, graphically explicit, and graphically implicit. The results from the study indicate that a significant difference exists between the two interface types while mental model type did not stimulate a significant difference. Lastly, theoretical contributions and pragmatic implications are

Metaphors of Human Thinking in HCI: Habit, Stream of Thought, Awareness, Utterance, and Knowing

Understanding human thinking is crucial in the design and evaluation of human-computer interaction. Inspired by introspective psychology, we present five metaphors of human thinking. The aim of the metaphors is to help designers to consider important traits of human thinking when designing. The metaphors capture aspects of human thinking virtually absent in recent years of HCI literature. As an...

Evaluating musical software using conceptual metaphors

An open challenge for interaction designers is to find ways of designing software to enhance the ability of novices to perform tasks that normally require specialized domain expertise. This challenge is particularly demanding in areas such as music analysis, where complex, abstract, domain-specific concepts and notations occur. One promising theoretical foundation for this work involves the ide...

Can Intelligent Environments be Trustworthy? Designing for Trust in Scientific Communication: Concept of Habitable Interfaces (Position Paper)

In this paper we propose the concept of Habitable Interfaces. This concept builds on values-based trust. We hypothesise that representations and interactions built on scientific metaphors and concepts and organised based on the knowledge within particular scientific domain will enable values-based trust. Habitable Interfaces may provide better information exchange within scientific communities....

3D Electronic Institutions: Social Interfaces for E-Commerce

In this paper we propose the use of Virtual Worlds as a 3D social interface for Electronic Institutions. It is shown how the two metaphors, Virtual Worlds and Electronic Institutions are combined into a single metaphor, 3D Electronic Institutions, while retaining the features and advantages of both. Its essence is to open Electronic Institutions to human users. The strong methodology and powerf...
