چکیده

A dynamic and reliable link adaptation algorithm is essential to achieving higher throughput limits in a distributed and diverse wireless network. However, SNR based Link Adaptations reported in literature thus far assume that SNR estimation is always ideal. In this paper, ideal is defined as the absolute performance of the SNR estimator which approaches the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) with almost no bias or variance. In real wireless communication systems, this assumption doesn’t hold true. We extend the SNR estimator for Single Input Single Output (SISO) system to a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Physical Layer (PHY) model, and show the actual performance of a cross layer SNR based link adaptation. Simulation results prove that the SNR estimates are unstable and fluctuate in a multi-path Rayleigh fading channel, degrading the effectiveness of link adaptation algorithm. This motivates us to propose an iterative SNR estimator for link adaptation algorithm that allows the efficient utilization of channel bandwidth to achieve a throughput gain for IEEE 802.11n based system.

Modeling ordered subcarrier SNR in MIMO-OFDM wireless links

Recent research has shown that the detected bit error-rate of coded and bitinterleaved multiple-input, multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) links is characterized by the ordered post-processing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we show that the per-stream ordered SNR converges asymptotically (with delay spread) to the inverse, marginal cumulative dist...

Link Adaptation Algorithm for the IEEE 802.11n MIMO System

The employment of Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) technology leads the WLAN to a new stage high throughput (HT) WLAN, recently proposed in IEEE 802.11 TGn. The nature of multiple operation modes of MIMO has fundamentally changed the requirements for the MAC layer link adaptation (LA) process. The LA algorithms currently used in single input single output (SISO) WLANs are hardly effective for HT...

NEW: A Channel Management Strategy for IEEE 802.11n

IEEE 802.11n is a newly emerging wireless standard which, relative to former 802.11 protocols, such as 802.11a/b/g, has a number of new mechanisms that enable multifold increases in transmission speeds. These new mechanisms include multipleinput-multiple-output (MIMO) transmission schemes as well as the option for channel bonding two 20MHz channels into a single 40MHz channel. Furthermore, 802....

Opportunistic Error Correction for MIMO-OFDM: From Theory to Practice

Opportunistic error correction based on fountain codes is especially designed for the MIMOOFDM system. The key point of this new method is the tradeoff between the code rate of error correcting codes and the number of sub-carriers in the channel vector to be discarded. By transmitting one fountain-encoded packet over a single sub-carrier per antenna, the ADC is allowed to only take care of the ...
