THE BUSINESS POTENTIAL OF ALGAL TECHNOLOGY FOR CO2 CAPTURE AND BIODIESEL PRODUCTION FROM WASTE TREATMENT FACILITIES Executive Summary of Georgios Hadjipanagi’s MSc THESIS

چکیده
Introduction According to the Fourth IPCC Assessment Report on Climate Change (AR4), anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are responsible for a major part of the observed global warming over the past 50 years. In addition carbon dioxide (CO2), released from the burning of fossil fuels and biomass (e.g. burning of forest for land clearance) is recognized as the most important anthropogenic GHG contributing to the change of atmospheric composition.

Microalgal Biomass for Greenhouse Gas Reductions; Potential for Replacement of Fossil-Fuels and Animal Feeds
Microalgal biomass production offers a number of advantages over conventional biomass production including, higher productivities, use of otherwise non productive land, reuse and recovery of waste nutrients, use of saline or brackish waters, and reuse of CO2 from power-plant flue-gas or similar sources. Microalgal biomass production and utilization offers potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) avo...
متن کاملFlue Gas CO2 Capture by Microalgae in Photobioreactor: a Sustainable Technology
This paper addresses the development of pilot scale sustainable technology for microalgae capture of CO2 from power plant flue gas in alkaline solutions to produce biodiesel from algal oil. A combination of computer tools for process simulation, economic evaluation, and environmental impact allow sustainable process assessment. Laboratory scale experiments for growth and culture for algae in la...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas reductions through enhanced use of residues in the life cycle of Malaysian palm oil derived biodiesel.
This study identifies the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, which can be achieved by optimizing the use of residues in the life cycle of palm oil derived biodiesel. This is done through compilation of data on existing and prospective treatment technologies as well as practical experiments on methane potentials from empty fruit bunches. Methane capture from the anaerobic digestion of pa...
متن کاملProduction of biodiesel from microalgae through biological carbon capture: a review
Gradual increase in concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere due to the various anthropogenic interventions leading to significant alteration in the global carbon cycle has been a subject of worldwide attention and matter of potential research over the last few decades. In these alarming scenario microalgae seems to be an attractive medium for capturing the excess CO2 present in ...
متن کاملThe Controlled Eutrophication Process: Using Microalgae for CO2 Utilization and Agricultural Fertilizer Recycling
In 1960, Oswald and Golueke [1] presented a conceptual techno-economic analysis, "The Biological Transformation of Solar Energy", proposing the use of large-scale raceway ponds to cultivate microalgal on wastewater nutrients and then to anaerobically ferment the algal biomass to methane fuel. The methane was to be converted into electricity, with the CO2-containing flue gas recycled to the pond...
