Ecology of Bottomland Oaks in the Southeastern United States
نویسنده
چکیده
0 aks (Querczrs spp.) are among the most ecologically and economically valued trees of the floodplain forests which occupy the river valleys that dissect the Gulf and Atlantic coastal plains of the southeastem United States. In these floodplain forests, several species from the sections Quercus and Lobarae are commonly found distributed along a gradient of sites ranging from hydric to mesic. Bottomland oaks exhibit a wide range of flooding tolerance, a narrow range of shade tolerance, and typically occupy disturbance dependent mid-successional seres. This manuscript provides a review of the silvical characteristics, species-stte associations, and ecological succession for the nine most common oak species endemic to bottomland sites of the southeastern United States.

Five-year radial growth of red oaks in mixed bottomland hardwood stands
We studied the relationships among 5-year radial (diameter and basal area) growth of red oak (genus Quercus, subgenus Erythrobalanus) crop trees and predictor variables representing individual tree vigor, distance-dependant competition measures, and distance-independent competition measures. The red oaks we examined are representative of the commercially and ecologically important oak species o...
متن کاملDescription of a new species of Euderus Haliday from the southeastern United States (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea, Eulophidae): the crypt-keeper wasp
A new species of the genus Euderus Haliday, Euderus setsp. n., is described and illustrated from the southeastern United States, where it parasitizes the crypt gall wasp, Bassettia pallida Ashmead, 1896, on live oaks in the genus Quercus (subsection Virentes). This is the 1st species of the genus reported from the southeastern United States to parasitize cynipid gall wasps and the 3rd species o...
متن کاملPhotosynthetic Light Response of Bottomland Oak Seedlings Raised under Partial Sunlight
Seedlings of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Rafinesque), Nuttall oak (Quercus nuttallii Palmer) and overcup oak (Quercus lyrata Walter) were grown under two light levels, partial (20 percent) or full sunlight, to study physiological acclimation of leaves to low light availability. Shifts in leaf morphology were noted for seedlings raised beneath partial sunlight, and photosynthetic light respon...

متن کاملHypotheses for Common Persimmon Stand Development in Mixed-species Bottomland Hardwood Forests
Common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.) is a shade-tolerant tree species found in southern bottomland hardwood forests. It is a desired species due primarily to its large fruit used by many wildlife species. While it has been observed as a component in natural reproduction, persimmon is rarely found as an overstory species in maturing bottomland hardwood stands. Unfortunately, little informa...
