چکیده

Many large organizations have a number of heterogeneous localized databases that are maintained and managed to support a set of local applications. One of the main difficulties in supporting global applications over a number of localized databases and migrating legacy ISs to modern computing environment is to cope with the heterogeneities of these systems. We propose a novel flexible architecture (HODFA) to dynamically connect these localized heterogeneous databases in forming a homogenized federated database system and to support the process of transforming a collection of heterogeneous information systems onto a homogeneous environment. We further develop an incremental methodology of homogenization in the context of our HODFA framework, which can facilitate different degrees of homogenization in a stepwise manner.

Enhanced active databases for federated information systems

Federated information systems provide access to interrelated data that is distributed over multiple autonomous and heterogeneous data sources. The integration of these sources demands for flexible and extensible architectures that balance both, the highest possible autonomy and a reasonable degree of information sharing. In current federated information systems, the integrated data sources do o...

Supporting Telecom Business Processes by means of Workflow Management and Federated Databases

This report addresses the issues related to the use of workflow management systems and federated databases to support business processes that operate on large and heterogeneous collections of autonomous information systems. We discuss how they can enhance the overall IT-architecture. Starting from the OSCA architecture, we develop an architecture that includes workflow management systems and fe...

Database Architecture for Data Warehousing: An Evolutionary Approach

In recent years, data warehouses have reached a prominent position in the database field, especially in the database industry. There are many issues in common between data warehouses and other database fields such as federated databases; in our opinion this fact has not been explored in its entirety. In this paper, an integrated database architecture in which data warehouses are part of the dat...

Practical Issues with Commercial Use of Federated Databases

Virtually all large enterprises have data stored in many databases. Often these databases are heterogeneous in terms of vendor, version, architecture, and capability. Federated databases, such as IBM’s Da&Joiner, are being used to provide rapid, cost effective access to this data across a variety of business types.

Integrating Engineering Databases: How Does the Application Domain Influence the FDBMS Architecture?

Federated database technology provides a basis to build integrated engineering environments. The specific requirements of this application domain influence the architecture and implementation details of a federated database management system (FDBMS) built to integrate engineering applications. This paper introduces an application scenario of an engineering environment, which is used to illustra...
