Short Labels by Traversal and Jumping

چکیده
In this paper, we propose an efficient implicit representation of caterpillar and bounded degree trees of n vertices. Our scheme, called Traversal & Jumping, assigns to the n vertices of any bounded degree tree distinct binary labels of log2 n+O(1) bits in O(n) time such that we can compute adjacency between two vertices only from their labels. We use our result to improve previous known upper bound for size of labels of implicit representation of outerplanar graphs (respectively planar graphs) to 2 log2 n (respectively (3 log2 n).

A Time-Space Tradeoff for Undirected Graph Traversal by Walking Automata
We prove a time-space tradeoff for traversing undirected graphs, using a structured model that is a nonjumping variant of Cook and Rackoff’s “jumping automata for graphs.”

متن کاملOblivious periodic traversal of anonymous, undirected graphs with advice and adversarial port numbers
We consider the problem of periodic graph traversal [2], which has previously been studied in a variety of settings [2, 5, 3, 7, 13, 12, 10, 11]. The problem of periodic graph traversal is concerned with an agent having to visit every node of a graph and return to its start location and state. The periodic graph traversal problem can be extended by labeling each node to help the agent explore t...
متن کاملA Generalization of Jumps and Labels
This paper describes a new language feature that is a hybrid of labels and procedures. It is closely related to jumping out of a functional subroutine, and includes conventional labels and jumping as a special, but probably not most useful, case. It is independent of assignment, i.e., it can be added to a “purely-functional” (“non-imperative”) system (such as lisp without pseudo-functions or pr...
متن کاملRebuilding a Tree from Its Traversals: A Case Study of Program Inversion
Given the inorder and preorder traversal of a binary tree whose labels are all distinct, one can reconstruct the tree. This article examines two existing algorithms for rebuilding the tree in a functional framework, using existing theory on function inversion. We also present a new, although complicated, algorithm by trying another possibility not explored before.
