Skin Friction in Simple Wall - Bounded Shear Flows in Large Reynolds Number Limit

چکیده
Expressions for variation of skin friction with Reynolds number in fully developed turbulent channel/pipe flows and in zero pressure gradient boundary layers are derived. The proposed in this paper asymptotic (Reδ = δ(x)U ν → ∞) theory is formulated as a convergent perturbation expansion in powers of small dimensionless parameters dδ dx → 0 and u∗ U → 0 applied directly to the Navier-Stokes equations. Here, u∗(x) and U(x) stand for friction and mean velocities, respectivel . The relations for the boundary layer thickness δ(x) and skin friction λ(x), derived from equations of motion, are in a close agreement with experimental data.

Contribution of Reynolds stress distribution to the skin friction in wall-bounded flows
A simple expression is derived of the componential contributions that different dynamical effects make to the frictional drag in turbulent channel, pipe and plane boundary layer flows. The local skin friction can be decomposed into four parts, i.e., laminar, turbulent, inhomogeneous and transient components, the second of which is a weighted integral of the Reynolds stress distribution. It is r...
متن کاملSudden Relaminarization and Lifetimes in Forced Isotropic Turbulence.
We demonstrate an unexpected connection between isotropic turbulence and wall-bounded shear flows. We perform direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence forced at large scales at moderate Reynolds numbers and observe sudden transitions from a chaotic dynamics to a spatially simple flow, analogous to the laminar state in wall bounded shear flows. We find that the survival probabilities...
متن کاملTurbulent drag reduction by constant near-wall forcing
Computational experiments based on the direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow reveal that the skin friction can be reduced as much as 70% by the action of a localized steady force acting against the flow close to the wall. In addition, the excessive shear stresses observed during the laminar-to-turbulence transition can be substantially reduced. For a sustained reduction in the s...
متن کاملNear-wall Influence of Large-scale Motions in High Reynolds Number Turbulent Boundary Layers
A spanwise array of surface hot-film shear-stress sensors and a traversing hot-wire located directly above one of these sensors are used to examine the relationship between skin-friction fluctuations and the velocity fluctuations in the boundary layer. Experiments are performed in a high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layer at Reθ ≈ 39000. The shear-stress data indicate the presence of larg...
