چکیده
Massively parallel computing holds the promise of extreme performance. Critical for achieving high performance is the ability to exploit locality of reference and eeective management of the communication resources. This article describes two communication primitives and associated mapping strategies that have been used for several diierent un-structured, three-dimensional, nite element applications in computational uid dynamics and structural mechanics.

PARALLEL 3D FINITE ELEMENT PARTICLE-IN-CELL SIMULATIONS WITH Pic3P∗
SLAC’s Advanced Computations Department (ACD) has developed the parallel 3D Finite Element electromagnetic Particle-In-Cell code Pic3P. Designed for simulations of beam-cavity interactions dominated by space charge effects, Pic3P solves the complete set of MaxwellLorentz equations self-consistently and includes spacecharge, retardation and boundary effects from first principles. Higher-order Fi...

EEcient data motion is critical for high performance computing on distributed memory architectures. The value of some techniques for eecient data motion is illustrated by identifying generic communication primitives. Further, the eeciency of these primitives is demonstrated on three diier-ent applications using the nite element method for unstructured grids and sparse solvers with diierent comm...
متن کاملBalancing the Communications and Computations in Parallel FEM Simulations on Unstructured Grids
We consider large scale finite element modeling on 3D unstructured grids. Large scale problems imply the use of parallel hardware and software. In general, the computational process on unstructured grids includes: mesh generation, mesh partitioning, optional mesh refinement, discretization, and the solution. The impact of the domain partitioning strategy on the performance of the discretization...

This paper presents the development of a parallel adaptive mesh control procedure designed to operate with high-order finite element analysis packages to enable large scale automated simulations on massively parallel computers. The curved mesh adaptation procedure uses curved entity mesh modification operations. Applications of the curved mesh adaptation procedure have been developed to support...
متن کاملParallel Octree-Based Finite Element Method for Large-Scale Earthquake Ground Motion Simulation
We present a parallel octree-based finite element method for large-scale earthquake ground motion simulation in realistic basins. The octree representation combines the low memory per node and good cache performance of finite difference methods with the spatial adaptivity to local seismic wavelengths characteristic of unstructured finite element methods. Several tests are provided to verify the...
