Oral Montelukast Sodium versus Inhaled Fluticasone Propionate in Adults with Mild Persistent Asthma
نویسنده
چکیده
Objective: Asthma consensus guidelines recommend the use of a controller agent to control asthma symptoms and reduce inflammation in patients with mild asthma. The objective of this study was to compare montelukast to inhaled fluticasone on the percentage of asthma-free days in patients with mild persistent asthma during 48 weeks of active treatment. Methods: This was a randomized, multicenter study with a 3-week single-blind run-in period, followed by a 12-week double-blind active treatment period, and a 36-week open-label active treatment period. Patients (aged 15 to 80 years) with mild persistent asthma as established by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines were randomized to receive oral montelukast 10 mg (n=325) or fluticasone 100 μg (n=320) twice daily by metered-dose inhaler. An analysis of covariance model was used to analyze the primary endpoint of asthma-free days. Montelukast 01Polos-vol5no3 1/26/70 6:27 PM Page 402

Salmeterol/fluticasone propionate: a review of its use in asthma.
Salmeterol/fluticasone propionate (Seretide/Advair Diskus [dry powder inhaler] or Seretide/Advair inhalation aerosol [metered-dose inhaler]) is a fixed-dose combination inhalation agent containing a long-acting beta2-adrenoceptor agonist (LABA) plus a corticosteroid. In patients with symptomatic asthma, twice-daily salmeterol/fluticasone propionate maintenance therapy improves lung function and...
متن کاملAdherence with montelukast or fluticasone in a long-term clinical trial: results from the mild asthma montelukast versus inhaled corticosteroid trial.
BACKGROUND Nonadherence with asthma therapy is common and may contribute to poor clinical outcomes. OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of dosing frequency and mode of delivery of therapy on adherence and clinical outcomes. METHODS We examined adherence in patients with mild persistent asthma (15-85 years) enrolled in a randomized study of montelukast (10 mg once daily) or fluticasone (88 micro...
متن کاملEffect of different monotherapies on serum nitric oxide and pulmonary functions in children with mild persistent asthma
INTRODUCTION Common medications used to treat mild persistent asthma are glucocorticoids, leukotriene receptor antagonists and theophylline. The aim of the study was to evaluate monotherapy with either inhaled steroids, oral leukotriene receptor antagonist or theophylline in Egyptian children with mild persistent asthma by determining their clinical, laboratory and spirometric responses to trea...

Salmeterol/fluticasone propionate, administered twice daily via a multidose dry powder inhaler (Seretide/Advair Diskus), Seretide Accuhaler or metered-dose hydrofluoroalkane (chlorofluorocarbon-free) inhaler (Seretide Evohaler), is a combination of the long-acting beta(2)-adrenoceptor agonist (beta(2)-agonist) [LABA] salmeterol and the corticosteroid fluticasone propionate. Maintenance therapy ...
متن کاملFluticasone propionate-salmeterol versus inhaled corticosteroids plus montelukast: outcomes study in pediatric patients with asthma
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study (GSK ADA111194) was to compare asthma-related health care utilization and costs associated with fluticasone propionate (an inhaled corticosteroid [ICS]) and salmeterol (a long-acting beta-agonist) in a single inhalation device (fluticasone propionate-salmeterol) versus the combination of ICS + montelukast in the treatment of pediatric patients with asthma. ...
