From homogenization to averaging in cellular flows

چکیده
We consider an elliptic eigenvalue problem with a fast cellular flow of amplitude A, in a twodimensional domain with L cells. For fixed A, and L→∞, the problem homogenizes, and has been well studied. Also well studied is the limit when L is fixed, and A → ∞. In this case the solution equilibrates along stream lines. In this paper, we show that if both A → ∞ and L → ∞, then a transition between the homogenization and averaging regimes occurs at A ≈ L. When A L, the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue is approximately constant. On the other hand, when A L, the principal eigenvalue behaves like σ̄(A)/L, where σ̄(A) ≈ √ AI is the effective diffusion matrix. A similar transition is observed for the solution of the exit time problem. The proof in the homogenization regime involves bounds on the second correctors. Miraculously, if the slow profile is quadratic, these estimates can be obtained using drift independent L → L∞ estimates for elliptic equations with an incompressible drift. This provides effective sub and super-solutions for our problem.

Modulational stability of cellular flows
We present here the homogenization of the equations for the initial modulational (large scale) perturbations of stationary solutions of the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations with a time-independent periodic rapidly oscillating forcing. The stationary solutions are cellular flows and they are determined by the stream function φ = sinx1/ sinx2/ + δ cosx1/ cosx2/ , 0 ≤ δ ≤ 1. Two results are...
متن کاملBreakdown of Homogenization for the Random Hamilton-jacobi Equations
We study the homogenization of Lagrangian functionals of Hamilton-Jacobi equations (HJ) with quadratic nonlinearity and unbounded stationary ergodic random potential in R, d≥1. We show that homogenization holds if and only if the potential is bounded from above. When the potential is unbounded from above, homogenization breaks down, due to the almost sure growth of the running maxima of the ran...
متن کاملPeriodic homogenization of G-equations and viscosity effects
G-equations are well-known front propagation models in combustion and are Hamilton–Jacobi type equations with convex but non-coercive Hamiltonians. Viscous G-equations arise from numerical discretization or modeling dissipative mechanisms. Although viscosity helps to overcome non-coercivity, we prove homogenization of an inviscid G-equation based on approximate correctors and attainability of c...
متن کاملHomogenization in Nonlinear Chemical Reactive Flows
The goal of this paper is to study a nonlinear model for some chemical reactive flows involving diffusion, adsorption and chemical reactions which take place at the boundary and also in the interior of a periodically perforated material. The effective behavior of such flows is governed by another nonlinear boundary-value problem, which contains extra zero-order terms and captures the effect pro...
متن کاملHomogenization of metamaterials by field averaging (invited paper)
Over the past several years, metamaterials have been introduced and rapidly been adopted as a means of achieving unique electromagnetic material response. In metamaterials, artificially structured—often periodically positioned—inclusions replace the atoms and molecules of conventional materials. The scale of these inclusions is smaller than that of the electromagnetic wavelength of interest, so...
