چکیده

We describe an L-band photometric survey of ∼ 0.5 deg2 of the Cha I dark cloud. The survey has a completeness limit of L < 11.0. Our survey detects 124 sources, including all known pre-main sequence stars with L ≤ 11. The fraction of sources with near-IR excess emission is 58% ± 4% for K = 9–11. Cha I sources have bluer H −K and K − L colors than pre-main sequence stars in Taurus-Auriga. These sources also have a strong correlation between EW(Hα) and K − L. Stars with K − L ≤ 0.6 have weak Hα emission; stars with K − L ≥ 0.6 have strong Hα emission. Because many Cha I sources are heavily reddened, this division between weak emission T Tauri stars and classical T Tauri stars occurs at a redder K − L than in Taurus-Auriga. Subject headings: ISM: individual (Chamaeleon I) — stars: formation — stars: premain sequence — infrared: stars Based on observations obtained with the SPIREX/Abu system in Antarctica. SPIREX/Abu operated for the 1999 observing season under agreement between the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) and the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA).

A new Classical T Tauri object at the sub-stellar boundary in Chamaeleon II

We have obtained lowand medium-resolution optical spectra of 20 candidate young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the nearby Chamaeleon II dark cloud, using the Magellan Baade telescope. We analyze these data in conjunction with near-infrared photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey. We find that one target, [VCE2001] C41, exhibits broad Hα emission as well as a variety of forbidden emissio...

Near-infrared Photometric Variability of Stars toward the Chamaeleon I Molecular Cloud

We present the results of a J,H, and Ks photometric monitoring campaign of a 0=72 6 area centered on the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. Data were obtained on 15 separate nights over a 4month time interval using the Two Micron All Sky Survey south telescope. Out of a total of 34,539 sources brighter than the photometric completeness limits (J = 16.0, H = 15.2, and Ks = 14.8), 95 exhibit near-...

Low mass T Tauri and young brown dwarf candidates in the Chamaeleon II dark cloud found by DENIS

We define a sample designed to select low-mass T Tauri stars and young brown dwarfs using DENIS data in the Chamaeleon II molecular cloud. We use a star count method to construct an extinction map of the Chamaeleon II cloud. We select our low-mass T Tauri star and young brown dwarf candidates by their strong infrared color excess in the I − J/J − Ks color-color dereddened diagram. We retain onl...

Clumpy filaments of the Chamaeleon I cloud: CO mapping with the SEST

The Chamaeleon I dark cloud (Cha I) has been mapped in CO (J = 1 − 0) with an angular resolution of 1 using the SEST telescope. The large scale structures previously observed with lower spatial resolution in the cloud turn into a network of clumpy filaments. The automatic Clumpfind routine developed by Williams et al. 1994 is used to identify individual clumps in a consistent way. Altogether 71...

The brown dwarf population in the Chamaeleon I cloud ⋆

We present the results of a multiband survey for brown dwarfs in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m telescope on La Silla (Chile). The survey has revealed a substantial population of brown dwarfs in this southern star forming region. Candidates were selected from R, I and Hα imaging observations. We also observed in two medium-band filters, ...
