Failure Recovery Alternatives in Grid-Based Distributed Query Processing: A Case Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fault-tolerance has long been a feature of database systems, with transactions supporting the structuring of applications so as to ensure continuation of updating applications in spite of machine failures. For read-only queries the perceived wisdom has been that support for faulttolerance is too expensive to be worthwhile. Distributed query processing (DQP) is coming to be seen as a promising way of implementing applications that combine structured data and analysis operations in dynamic distributed settings such as computational grids. Accordingly, a number of protocols have been described that support tolerance to failure of intermediate machines, so as to permit continuation from surviving intermediate state. However, a distributed query can have a non-trivial mapping onto hardware resources. Because of this it is often possible to choose between a number of possible recovery strategies in the event of a failure. The work described here makes an initial investigation in this area in the context of an example query expressed over distributed resources in a Grid and shows that it can be worthwhile to make this choice between recovery alternatives dynamically, at the point a query is detected rather than statically beforehand.

The performance of Grid computing technologies for distributed data access and query processing has been investigated in a number of studies. However, different Grid data sources may have schema conflicts which require fine-grained resolution through the use of data integration technologies that are not supported by the current generation of Grid data access and querying middleware. This is par...
متن کاملImproving Query Processing Performance in Large Distributed Database Management Systems
The dream of computing power as readily available as the electricity in a wall socket is coming closer to reality with the arrival of grid and cloud computing. At the same time, databases grow to sizes beyond what can be efficiently managed by single server systems. There is a need for efficient distributed database management systems (DBMSs). Current distributed DBMSs are not built to scale to...
متن کاملA Quality-Centric Data Model for Distributed Stream Management Systems
It is challenging for large-scale stream management systems to return always perfect results when processing data streams originating from distributed sources. Data sources and intermediate processing nodes may fail during the lifetime of a stream query. In addition, individual nodes may become overloaded due to processing demands. In practice, users have to accept incomplete or inaccurate quer...
متن کاملModel Predictive Control of Distributed Energy Resources with Predictive Set-Points for Grid-Connected Operation
This paper proposes an MPC - based (model predictive control) scheme to control active and reactive powers of DERs (distributed energy resources) in a grid - connected mode (either through a bus with its associated loads as a PCC (point of common coupling) or an MG (micro - grid)). DER may be a DG (distributed generation) or an ESS (energy storage system). In the proposed scheme, the set - poin...
