Norm Consistency in Practical Reasoning Agents
نویسندگان
چکیده
Agents based on reactive planning architectures use pre-specified plans as behaviour specifications. Typically, such agents are motivated by desires to achieve or maintain states of the world. In this paper, however, we discuss a reactive planning agent architecture – NoA – where the behaviour of an agent is motivated and governed by norms. Normative agents are motivated by obligations to act, prohibitions for acting in particular ways, and permissions to act. Within this context, we focus on the problem of the adoption of a norm: under what circumstances is it appropriate for an agent to adopt a new obligation, prohibition or permission and what effect does it have on the agent’s normative state? In particular, the issue of the consistency of a new norm with the norms that currently influence the agent’s behaviour is considered. This provides useful input to the decision of whether to adopt a norm. This problem is investigated with respect to the NoA agent architecture, but, it is argued, provides useful insight to the problem of norm consistency in general and particularly where practical reasoning agents are concerned.

Strategies for Resolving Norm Conflict in Practical Reasoning
Norm-governed agents act according to norms such as obligations, permissions or prohibitions. In their practical reasoning, they are not only influenced by what they actually belief, desire and intend, but what they are obliged, permitted or prohibited to do they are governed by norms. When agents adopt such norms, specific care must be taken to avoid conflicts, so that consistency of the set o...
متن کاملNorm-governed practical reasoning agents
This thesis describes a model of norm-governed practical reasoning agents and demonstrates the implementation of this model in the form of the NoA Normative Agent language and architecture. The introduction of normative concepts such as obligations, permissions and prohibitions into the practical reasoning of an agent is motivated by the need for effective coordination mechanisms in open system...
متن کاملNorm Adoption and Consistency in the NoA Agent Architecture
The behaviour of a norm-driven agent is governed by obligations, permissions and prohibitions. Agents joining a society or accepting a contract for the purpose of executing specific collaborative tasks usually have to adopt norms representing certain rules and regulations. Adoption of norms can cause problems – an agent maybe already hold norms that would be in conflict or inconsistent with new...
متن کاملGödel Negation Makes Unwitnessed Consistency Crisp
Ontology consistency has been shown to be undecidable for a wide variety of fairly inexpressive fuzzy Description Logics (DLs). In particular, for any t-norm “starting with” the Lukasiewicz t-norm, consistency of crisp ontologies (w.r.t. witnessed models) is undecidable in any fuzzy DL with conjunction, existential restrictions, and (residual) negation. In this paper we show that for any t-norm...
متن کاملTowards the Norm-Aware Agent: Bridging the Gap Between Deontic Specifications and Practical Mechanisms for Norm Monitoring and Norm-Aware Planning
In the agents’ literature, norms have been studied from multiple perspectives, but while formalisations tend to be disconnected from possible implementations due to the lack of differentiation between abstract norm and norm instantiation, on the other hand implementations tend to be weak groundings of deontic logics, tightly coupled to one particular implementation domain. Furthermore, differen...
