Two norms used commonly for this purpose are L1 and L2, which are specific instances of the Minkowski metric. However, there is often not a principled reason for selecting one norm over the other. One way to address this problem is by examining whether one metric better captures the perceptual notion of image similarity than the other. With this goal, we examined perceptual preferences for images retrieved on the basis of the L1 versus the L2 norm. These images were either small fragments without recognizable content, or larger patterns with recognizable content created via vector quantization. In both conditions the subjects showed a consistent preference for images matched using the L1 metric. These results suggest that, in the domain of natural images of the kind we have used, the L1 metric may better capture human notions of image similarity.

A perceptually based comparison of image similarity metrics.
The assessment of how well one image matches another forms a critical component both of models of human visual processing and of many image analysis systems. Two of the most commonly used norms for quantifying image similarity are L1 and L2, which are specific instances of the Minkowski metric. متن کاملA Novel Image Structural Similarity Index Considering Image Content Detectability Using Maximally Stable Extremal Region Descriptor
The image content detectability and image structure preservation are closely related concepts with undeniable role in image quality assessment. However, the most attention of image quality studies has been paid to image structure evaluation, few of them focused on image content detectability. Examining the image structure was firstly introduced and assessed in Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) measu...
متن کاملGenerating Images with Perceptual Similarity Metrics based on Deep Networks
Image-generating machine learning models are typically trained with loss functions based on distance in the image space. This often leads to over-smoothed results. We propose a class of loss functions, which we call deep perceptual similarity metrics (DeePSiM), that mitigate this problem. Instead of computing distances in the image space, we compute distances between image features extracted by...
متن کاملColor-based estimates of stimulus similarity predict perceptual similarity of image pairs to monkeys
Introduction: Studies of object perception are hampered by the difficulty of mathematically describing the similarity of realistic images. Recently, color based metrics have been developed to search for similar images in large databases of realistic images. Such metrics have been shown to predict human subjects’ similarity rankings of realistic images, because the color of realistic images ofte...
متن کاملCluster-Based Image Segmentation Using Fuzzy Markov Random Field
Image segmentation is an important task in image processing and computer vision which attract many researchers attention. There are a couple of information sets pixels in an image: statistical and structural information which refer to the feature value of pixel data and local correlation of pixel data, respectively. Markov random field (MRF) is a tool for modeling statistical and structural inf...
متن کاملEffective and efficient subjective testing of texture similarity metrics.
The development and testing of objective texture similarity metrics that agree with human judgments of texture similarity require, in general, extensive subjective tests. The effectiveness and efficiency of such tests depend on a careful analysis of the abilities of human perception and the application requirements. The focus of this paper is on defining performance requirements and testing pro...
