چکیده

The Swedish nuclear waste will be stored in copper canisters and kept isolated deep under ground for at least 100,000 years. To ensure reliable sealing of the canisters, friction stir welding is utilized. To repetitively produce high quality welds, it is vital to use automatic control of the process. A decentralized solution is designed based on an already existing temperature controller and a proposed linear plunge depth controller. The plunge depth control is challenging mainly because of de ection in the machine, thermal expansion and cross couplings in the process. The decentralized controller has been implemented and evaluated on the real system with good results, keeping the plunge depth within the necessary ±0.1 mm of its setpoint at the same time as the temperature speci cations are met.

Modeling and Control of Friction Stir Welding in 5 cm thick

Friction stir welding has become a popular forging technique used in many applications. The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) evaluates this method to seal the 5 cm thick copper canisters that will contain the spent nuclear fuel. To produce repetitive, high quality welds, the process must be controlled, and today a cascade controller is used to keep the desired stir zone t...

Simulation of Material Plastic Flow and Morphology During Friction Stir Welding of Stainless Steel to Aluminum Alloy Dissimilar Joint

Today, steel to aluminum joints are used to facilitate transportation and fuel consumption. These joints are applied from nuclear, aerospace and naval to automobile and kitchen industries. According to previous studies fusion welding processes are not suitable methods for these joints, solid-state welding, especially friction stir welding, is a proper way to use for these joints. However, using...

Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys: A Review

Friction stir welding is a solid state joining process. High strength aluminum alloys are widely used in aircraft and marine industries. Generally, the mechanical properties of fusion welded aluminum joints are poor. As friction stir welding occurs in solid state, no solidification structures are created thereby eliminating the brittle and eutectic phases common in fusion welding of high streng...

Ultrasonic Investigations on Copper Canister Welds in Preparation for the Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel in a Deep Repository

Abstract. The Swedish KBS-3 design for the disposal of spent fuel is based on its encapsulation cast iron cylinders that have an outer 30 – 50 mm thick shield of copper and deposition in crystalline rock embedded in bentonite at a depth of about 500 m. The KBS-3 system is based on a multi barrier system where the canister is the primary barrier. The cast iron insert gives the canister the neces...
