چکیده

We consider type IIB string theory compactified on an 8-dimensional Spin(7) manifold with N D5-branes, undergoing a conifold transition to a geometry with no branes and N units of dual 3-form RR flux through appropriate 3-cycles. We show that at constant IIB coupling, in the limit of large N and finite ’t Hooft coupling, this conifold transition can be lifted to a purely geometric S flop in the 11-dimensional space of an equivalent F-theory without branes and fluxes. The S flop in this equivalent F-theory is a higher-dimensional analogue of the S flop in M-theory on a G2 manifold discovered by Atiyah et al., albeit resulting in a theory with N = 1 in d = 2 instead of d = 4. ∗E-mail: [email protected]

A Large N Type IIB Duality via a Spin(7) Geometric Transition as an F-theory Flop

The geometric features and toric descriptions of two different 8-dimensional Spin(7) manifolds constructed via distinct resolutions of the cone over an SU(3)/U(1) base, reveals that the geometry of the Spin(7) conifold transition considered by Gukov et al. in [1], is effected by a transition in its 6-dimensional submanifold which is isomorphic to a resolved or deformed Calabi-Yau 3-fold. This a...

On Geometric Transitions in String Compactifications

We reconsider the study of the geometric transitions and brane/flux dualities in various dimensions. We first give toric interpretations of the topology changing transitions in Calabi-Yau conifold and the Spin(7) manifold. The latter, for instance, can be viewed as three intersecting Calabi-Yau conifolds according to CP toric graph. Orbifolds of such geometries are given in terms of del Pezzo c...

Geometric Transitions and Strong Coupling E ects in Supersymmetric Field Theories

Geometrical transitions are powerful tools designed to study strong coupling e ect in a general class of N = 1 theories realized on type IIB D5 branes wrapping 2-cycles of local Calabi-Yau threefolds or as e ective eld theories on D4 branes in type IIA brane con gurations. In this notes we discuss the issue of the classical moduli space for N = 2; Qn i=1 U(Ni) theories deformed by a general sup...

Conifold Transitions and Five-Brane Condensation in M-Theory on Spin(7) Manifolds

We conjecture a topology changing transition in M-theory on a non-compact asymptotically conical Spin(7) manifold, where a 5-sphere collapses and a CP bolt grows. We argue that the transition may be understood as the condensation of M5-branes wrapping S5. Upon reduction to ten dimensions, it has a physical interpretation as a transition of D6-branes lying on calibrated submanifolds of flat spac...

The effects of inhomogeneities on the cosmology of type IIB conifold transitions

In this paper we examine the evolution of the effective field theory describing a conifold transition in type IIB string theory. Previous studies have considered such dynamics starting from the cosmological approximation of homogeneous fields , here we include the effects of inhomogeneities by using a real-time lattice field theory simulation. By including spatial variations we are able to simu...
