Heuristics for sparse general travelling salesman problems

چکیده
The well-known travelling salesman problem can be expressed in graphtheoretic terms as follows : find a minimum-weight Hamiltonian cycle in a connected edge-weighted graph G(N, A). vVe concentrate here on the problem where G is large and sparse, i.e., where INI is 500 or more and IAI is O( INI). Such graphs arise frequently in practice, where G represents a road network, and each node (city) is connected directly to 3 or 4 other nodes. Sparse graphs may not have Hamiltonian cycles and hence there may be no solution to the problem as stated. vVhether this is the case or not, the requirement that the cycle is Hamiltonian is often unnecessarily restrictive. It is sufficient in many practical problems, such as traffic planning. to address only what is called the General Travelling Salesman Problem, which requires merely a minimum-weight, closed spanning walk, in which any node can be repeated if this lowers the total weight. Such a walk can, of course, be found in any connected graph. vVe report on the results of an experimental comparison of some heuristic methods for this problem.

Combining Simulated Annealing with Local Search Heuristics
We introduce a meta-heuristic to combine simulated annealing with local search methods for CO problems. This new class of Markov chains leads to signiicantly more powerful optimization methods than either simulated annealing or local search. The main idea is to embed deterministic local search techniques into simulated annealing so that the chain explores only local optima. It makes large, glob...
متن کاملA hybrid metaheuristic using fuzzy greedy search operator for combinatorial optimization with specific reference to the travelling salesman problem
We describe a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm for combinatorial optimization problems with a specific reference to the travelling salesman problem (TSP). The method is a combination of a genetic algorithm (GA) and greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP). A new adaptive fuzzy a greedy search operator is developed for this hybrid method. Computational experiments using a wide range of...
متن کاملSimulated annealing: a fast heuristic for some generic layout problems
There are two major criticisms about simulated annealing as a general method for solving combinatorial optimization problems: its effectiveness when compared with other welldesigned heuristics and its excessive computation time. In this paper, we show that simulated annealing, with properly des~gned annealing schedule and move generation strategy, achieves significant speerlups for high quality...
متن کاملA New Simulated Annealing Approach for Travelling Salesman Problem
The aim of this study is to improve searching capability of simulated annealing (SA) heuristic through integration of two new neighborhood mechanisms. Due to its ease of formulation, difficulty to solve and various real life applications several Travelling Salesman Problems (TSP) were selected from the literature for the testing of the proposed methods. The proposed methods were also compared t...
متن کاملInsertion heuristics for central cycle problems
A central cycle problem requires a cycle that is reasonably short and keeps a the maximum distance from any node not on the cycle to its nearest node on the cycle reasonably low. The objective may be to minimise maximum distance or cycle length and the solution may have further constraints. Most classes of central cycle problems are NP-hard. This paper investigates insertion heuristics for cent...
