Upper limits to the water abundance in starburst galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Aims. We have searched for emission from the 557 GHz ortho-water line in the interstellar medium of six nearby starburst galaxies. Methods. We used the Odin satellite to observe the 110 − 101 transition of o-H2O in the galaxies NGC253, IC342, M82, NGC4258, CenA, and M51. None of the galaxies in our sample was detected. Results. We derive three sigma upper limits to the H2O abundance relative to H2 ranging from 2× 10−9 to 1× 10−8. The best of these upper limits are comparable to the measured abundance of H2O in the Galactic star forming region W3. However, if only 10% of the molecular gas is in very dense cores, then the water abundance limits in the cores themselves would be larger by a factor of 10 i.e. 2 × 10−8 to 1 × 10−7. Conclusions. These observations suggest that detections of H2O emission in galaxies with the upcoming Herschel Space Observatory are likely to require on-source integration times of an hour or more except in the very brightest extragalactic targets such as M82 and NGC253.

Upper Limits to Fluxes of Neutrinos and Gamma-Rays from Starburst Galaxies
Loeb and Waxman have argued that high energy neutrinos from the decay of pions produced in interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas in starburst galaxies would be produced with a large enough flux to be observable. Here we obtain an upper limit to the diffuse neutrino flux from starburst galaxies which is a factor of ∼5 lower than the flux which they predict. Compared with predicted fl...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملAre E+A Galaxies Dusty-Starbursts?: VLA 20cm Radio Continuum Observation
E+A galaxies are characterized as a galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines but without any [OII] or Hα emission lines. The existence of strong Balmer absorption lines means that E+A galaxies have experienced a starburst within the last <1-1.5 Gyr. However, the lack of [OII] or Hα emission lines indicates that E+A galaxies do not have any on-going star formation. Therefore, E+A galaxies are ...
متن کاملSearch for 183 GHz water maser emission in starburst galaxies
We have searched for water vapor emission at 183 GHz, redshifted at 157 GHz and 161 GHz, in the two ultraluminous starburst galaxies Mkn 1014 and VIIZw244. Due to the low energy level of the upper state of the 183 GHz transition (≈ 200K), it is expected that the emission regions are extended, as they are in the Orion or W49Nmolecular cloud cores. Since the warm and dense gas, typical of star-fo...
متن کاملConstraints on the presence of water megamaser emission in z ∼ 2 . 5 ultraluminous infrared starburst galaxies
We present Expanded Very Large Array and Arecibo observations of two lensed submm galaxies at z ∼ 2.5, in order to search for redshifted 22.235 GHz water megamaser emission. Both SMM J14011+0252 and SMM J16359+6612 have multi-wavelength characteristics consistent with ongoing starburst activity, as well as CO line emission indicating the presence of warm molecular gas. Our observations do not r...
